Chapter 4 - The Monday Morning Ambush

Monday morning arrived with the crisp, unforgiving clarity of an autumn dawn in Connecticut.

I was sitting in my usual spot at the kitchen island of my Greenwich home, sipping hot black coffee, when the back door clicked open. Eric walked in, wearing his tailored charcoal business suit, holding a travel mug, looking entirely relaxed and triumphant. He had spent the weekend pretending to pack for a "solo business retreat" while telling everyone I was happily vacationing in Paris.

"Morning, honey," Eric said smoothly, walking over to kiss the top of my head. "Did you sleep well? Flight to Paris must have been exhausting."

I didn't flinch. I took a slow sip of my coffee and looked up at him with mild curiosity. "Actually, Eric, my flight never took off. I missed it."

Eric froze mid-stride, his coffee mug hovering inches from his mouth. His eyes darted nervously across the kitchen. "What do you mean, you missed it? You left for the airport on Thursday morning."

"I got intercepted by a neighbor, came back inside, and listened to a very interesting conversation happening right here in my house," I replied, my voice as calm as glass.

Panic flashed across Eric's face for a fraction of a second before he quickly masked it with an aggressive, defensive smirk. "What are you talking about, Clara? You're being paranoid. Jet lag is making you delusional."

Before Eric could invent another lie, the front doorbell chimed twice—sharp, loud, and official.

Before Eric could move, the front door swung open. Two federal marshals in dark tactical vests, accompanied by Special Agent Vance and two local Greenwich police officers, marched straight into our foyer.

Eric turned pale as a sheet, dropping his coffee mug onto the hardwood floor where it shattered into a hundred pieces. "W-What is this?! Who are you people?! You can't just barge into my house—!"

"It’s not your house, Mr. Prescott. That’s federal property fraud," Special Agent Vance interrupted coldly, stepping forward and flashing a gold badge. "Eric Prescott, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, identity theft, forgery of bank compliance documents, and corporate embezzlement."

"This is insane! My wife approved this! Show me a warrant!" Eric shrieked, his voice cracking with sheer terror as the marshals grabbed his arms and forced his hands behind his back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"I didn't approve a damn thing, Eric," I said, standing up smoothly from the kitchen island. I held up my phone, tapping the screen to play a crystal-clear snippet of the voice memo through the kitchen speakers.

“And once Clara lands at Charles de Gaulle, I’ll lock our joint accounts... I’m filing for divorce on Monday...”

Eric stared at me, his mouth hanging open, finally realizing the horrifying magnitude of his mistake. He hadn't just underestimated his wife; he had tried to rob a master fraud auditor.

As Eric was dragged out the front door in handcuffs, flashing lights from three unmarked federal vehicles illuminated our driveway. And the surprises for the Prescott family were only just beginning.
