Chapter 7 - ANDREW’S LAST WARNING

Ryan’s leather folder smelled faintly of dust and old paper.

He sat across from me at the dining table while Agent Brooks photographed each letter. Detective Mercer read silently, occasionally marking a page with a numbered evidence tab.

I watched Ryan’s hands.

They were broad like Robert’s, but unlike my father, Ryan seemed unable to keep them still. He rubbed his thumb against the edge of his index finger whenever a new page was opened.

“How long have you known about us?” I asked.

“Since I was twelve.”

“And Margaret?”

“I met her once.”

The answer surprised me.

“When?”

“Robert brought her to my mother’s house after my mother threatened to file for child support. Margaret offered money if we stayed quiet.”

My stomach turned.

“How old were you?”

“Fourteen.”

“What did she say?”

“That exposing the truth would destroy three innocent children.”

“Three?”

“You, Preston, and me.”

Margaret had counted Ryan as innocent only when she needed his silence.

“Did your mother accept?”

“No. She told Margaret to leave. But she never filed. Robert began paying tuition and expenses directly.”

“Why?”

“Because my mother became ill. She died when I was nineteen.”

“I’m sorry.”

Ryan nodded.

“Robert promised he would acknowledge me after she died. He never did.”

Agent Brooks opened the oldest letter.

Robert’s handwriting covered two pages.

RYAN, I KNOW YOU RESENT THE ARRANGEMENT, BUT PUBLIC DISCLOSURE WOULD DAMAGE EVERYONE. MARGARET UNDERSTANDS THAT YOU ARE PART OF THIS FAMILY EVEN IF CLAIRE AND PRESTON CANNOT KNOW YET.

Ryan looked toward the stairs.

“Is Sophie all right?”

“She will recover.”

“I saw the hotel footage online.”

His face tightened with anger.

“I have never met Preston, but Robert talked about him constantly. Every mistake was temporary. Every debt was someone else’s fault.”

“That sounds familiar.”

“I thought Robert loved him more because he could claim him publicly.”

“And Preston thought Robert loved him because he was perfect.”

Ryan gave a bitter smile.

“Maybe Robert only loved the version of himself he saw in people who obeyed him.”

Mercer placed one of the letters in front of us.

“This was written two weeks before Andrew’s death.”

Robert’s words were short.

ANDREW HAS DISCOVERED THE INVESTMENT STRUCTURE. HE THREATENS TO REMOVE ME FROM THE TRUST AND REPORT THE COMPANIES. I HAVE EXPLAINED THAT SUCH ACTION WOULD DESTROY PRESTON’S FUTURE AND EXPOSE OUR FAMILY. HE REFUSES TO LISTEN.

The next paragraph made my hands cold.

SOME PEOPLE CONFUSE MORALITY WITH LOYALTY. ANDREW HAS BECOME A THREAT TO BOTH.

I looked at Agent Brooks.

“You said there was no evidence Robert caused the accident.”

“There still is not.”

“Was the truck driver connected to him?”

“We are reviewing the original investigation.”

“Why was the driver never charged?”

Mercer answered.

“He suffered a medical emergency. Toxicology was negative. The crash was ruled accidental.”

“Could Robert have influenced the investigation?”

“We have found no indication of that.”

No indication was not the same as no possibility.

I thought of Andrew leaving that morning. He had seemed distracted. Before stepping outside, he returned to the kitchen and hugged Sophie longer than usual.

At the time, I believed he was worried about the company sale.

Now I wondered whether he had planned to tell me about Robert that evening.

Ryan reached deeper into the folder.

“There is one more thing.”

He removed a small digital recorder.

“Robert mailed this to me four years ago with tax documents. I think it was sent by mistake.”

“Did you listen to it?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you keep it?”

“Because it was the first time I heard him admit what he was doing.”

Agent Brooks placed the recorder inside a protective evidence sleeve and pressed play through the plastic.

Robert’s voice filled the room.

“Preston needs capital. Andrew’s sale will provide it, but he has become suspicious.”

Margaret replied.

“Then wait until the paperwork is complete.”

“He plans to remove me.”

“You said Claire will add you back.”

“She follows Andrew now.”

My mother’s voice sharpened.

“Then make sure she needs us.”

There was a pause.

Robert spoke again.

“Grief makes people dependent.”

The recording ended.

I could not move.

Ryan looked sick.

“I am sorry.”

“You did not say it.”

“I should have given this to someone years ago.”

“Would you have known what it meant?”

“No.”

“Then stop carrying their guilt.”

The words surprised me.

I had carried Margaret’s and Robert’s shame for so long that I recognized the weight when I saw it on someone else.

Agent Brooks collected the recorder.

“We will compare the metadata with the accident timeline.”

“What happens if there is no connection?” I asked.

“Then the financial crimes remain extensive.”

“And if there is?”

“We follow the evidence.”

Sophie appeared at the top of the stairs holding the railing.

“Mommy?”

I hurried to her.

She had slept for several hours. Her face was pale, but her eyes were clear.

“Who is that man?” she whispered.

I looked at Ryan.

He stood awkwardly beside the table.

“That is Ryan.”

“Is he police?”

“No.”

“Is he family?”

The question stopped me.

Blood had defined family for Margaret whenever it demanded obedience. It had become irrelevant whenever compassion was required.

Ryan did not ask for a title.

He simply waited.

“He is someone who helped us,” I said.

Sophie descended the remaining stairs and looked at him.

“Thank you for helping my mom.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“You are welcome.”

My phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

She had gone to the courthouse with an attorney to seek an emergency protective order against Preston. Her voice shook.

“Claire, he is here.”

“Preston?”

“Yes. His attorney brought him for surrender.”

“Are you safe?”

“There are officers everywhere.”

“What happened?”

“He asked to speak with me. I said no.”

I waited.

“Then Robert arrived.”

“Robert was released?”

“Only until charges are formally filed. But that is not the problem.”

“What is?”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Robert told Preston about Ryan.”

I looked across the room.

Ryan must have seen something in my expression.

He stood.

Vanessa continued.

“Preston lost control. He accused Robert of stealing from him too.”

“Did Robert deny it?”

“No.”

“What did he say?”

“He said Preston was never supposed to own the company permanently.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then who was?”

“Ryan.”

Across the table, Ryan went still.

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“Claire, Preston just told the police he will testify against Robert and Margaret.”

“That could help.”

“He wants immunity.”

“He is not getting immunity for what he did to Sophie.”

“I know.”

Vanessa took a breath.

“But he claims Robert confessed something about Andrew’s accident.”

The room disappeared around me.

May you like

“What confession?”

“He said Robert knew the truck driver.”
