Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Dre

Downstairs in the grand ballroom, the music had stopped entirely.
The string quartet sat frozen with their bows hovering over their violins. Sixty of New York’s most elite executives, politicians, and socialites stood in paralyzed silence as federal agents walked in through the main entrance, their badges gleaming under the eighteen-foot Christmas tree.
Matthias pushed his way through the stunned crowd, his face pale, his immaculate tuxedo suddenly looking like a cheap costume. Beside him, Fiona Vale looked like she was going to faint, her ivory gown clashing violently with the brutal reality of handcuffs and federal indictments.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Matthias shouted, his voice cracking with panic as he spotted Julian Vance standing at the top of the grand staircase. "This is private property! You have no jurisdiction here without a—"
"Without a signed federal warrant backed by undeniable forensic evidence of corporate tax evasion, money laundering, and massive municipal fraud?" Julian interrupted, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom. He gestured toward the top of the stairs, where I stood beside two federal agents, looking down at my husband with absolute, unshakeable calm.
Matthias’s eyes bulged as he saw me. The terrifying realization hit him all at once—not just that his empire was crumbling, but that the woman he had underestimated, neglected, and betrayed was the architect of his total destruction.
"Serena..." Matthias breathed, taking a desperate step toward the stairs. "Serena, please. This is a misunderstanding. We can talk about this. We're a family! Think of the baby—"
"Don't you ever say that name," I said, my voice ringing out clear and cold across the room. I walked slowly down the grand staircase, my hand resting gently on my swollen belly, every step purposeful and unyielding. "You spent months lying to my face, bringing your mistress to my home, embezzling millions of dollars, and plotting to throw me out like trash. You thought my pregnancy made me weak, Matthias. You thought silence meant submission."
I stopped three steps from the bottom, looking down at him with profound pity.
"You built your entire life on sand, Matthias Dre. And the tide just came in."
Julian stepped forward, reading the formal charges aloud as federal agents placed cold steel cuffs around Matthias’s wrists. Fiona Vale was booked right beside him, her mascara running down her cheeks in jagged, black streaks as the flashbulbs of investigative journalists waiting outside captured every humiliating second.
As Matthias was dragged past me toward the heavy oak doors, he muttered a desperate, venomous plea: "You'll ruin everything, Serena. You won't get a dime. You'll be left with nothing!"

I reached down, pulled my platinum diamond wedding ring off my finger, and dropped it onto a silver champagne tray passing by on a server's tray. It landed with a soft, definitive clink.
"I already have everything I need," I whispered.
