Chapter 4 - The Predator in the Penthouse

Khloe didn't scream. She didn't weep. The absolute betrayal of discovering she had traded one invisible cage for another acted on her mind like pure, concentrated acid, stripping away every ounce of intimidation.

She crossed the vast, open-plan penthouse in long, deliberate strides, marching directly up to the sprawling walnut control console where the multi-monitor wall was wired. Without hesitation, she slammed her palm down onto the master command keyboard, striking the manual override key that instantly froze and locked every single camera feed on the wall.

Arthur strode forward, his brow furrowing for the first time. "Khloe, don't touch the routing array—"

She whipped around to face him, her eyes blazing with fury. "Don't you dare tell me what to touch!"

He stopped ten feet away, his hands resting naturally at his sides, his expression shifting into a defensive armor of absolute calm.

"You monitored me," Khloe said, her voice shaking with restrained violence.

"Yes."

"How long?"

Arthur didn't flinch away from the question. "Three months."

The exact same length of time David had been stalking her through the cubicles and parking structures of Zenith Tower. The irony was so dark, so violently twisted, that Khloe let out a single, sharp laugh devoid of any humor.

"So let me get this straight," Khloe said, stepping toward him, forcing the billionaire to hold his ground. "The man downstairs watched me because he believed my presence in his vicinity meant I owed him his twisted version of attention and affection."

Arthur remained silent, his jaw tight.

"And the man upstairs watched me because he believed owning the building, owning the company, and owning the technology gave him total permission to turn my entire life into his personal, twenty-four-hour entertainment broadcast."

"That is a fundamental mischaracterization," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, commanding warning. "Rigsby was a predator with malicious intent. My oversight was security, risk management, and protection."

"Protection?" Khloe barked out another bitter laugh, stepping closer until she was nearly chest-to-chest with him. She had to tilt her head up to maintain eye contact, but she refused to back down an inch. "You watched me sleep through my desk breaks! You watched me take phone calls from my grieving father! You watched every vulnerable second of my life without my knowledge or consent, and you call that protection?"

"In this building, everyone is a security variable," Arthur argued, his voice hardening as his own dominant nature flared back to life. "When Rigsby's behavioral profile deviated into stalking vectors two months ago, my automated systems flagged him. I monitored him to ensure he didn't cross a physical line before security could legally intervene."

"You enjoyed it," Khloe whispered, the accusation hitting the air like a physical blow.

Arthur went completely still. The silence stretched between them, heavy and charged with an electric tension that felt entirely detached from the corporate world outside.

"You didn't just watch Rigsby," Khloe continued, her voice steadying as her analytical mind took over. "You watched me. You studied my habits, my schedule, my reactions, every single detail of my daily routine, while hiding behind your glass walls and your billion-dollar empire. You're just a more expensive, better-dressed version of the creep in accounting."

A dangerous flash of dark fire ignited in Arthur’s slate-gray eyes. For the first time, the polished veneer of the untouchable CEO cracked, revealing the ruthless, possessive man underneath.

"Do not ever compare me to that pathetic insect," Arthur said softly, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register that vibrated through the room. "Rigsby wanted to consume you, to break you down until you had nowhere else to turn. I built the walls that kept him from destroying you entirely. Without me, he would have dragged you out of that parking garage six weeks ago."

"And that makes you my owner?" Khloe challenged, her chin lifting defiantly. "That gives you the right to harvest my privacy piece by piece?"

Arthur stared down at her, breathing heavily through his nose, clearly unaccustomed to anyone—let alone a mid-level employee—challenging his authority with such fearless, unyielding defiance. The woman he had spent three months observing through a cold glass lens was suddenly standing right in front of him, proving to be infinitely more dangerous, more complicated, and far harder to control than either man in the building had ever anticipated.

"You think you can walk out of here and pretend none of this happened?" Arthur asked, taking one slow, deliberate step back into her space.

"I don't need to pretend," Khloe said, her gaze locked onto his with unwavering intensity.

Before Arthur could anticipate her movement, Khloe spun around, reached behind the master console where the primary localized data banks were housed, and released the manual security latch. With a sharp, metallic click, the primary solid-state surveillance drive slid out of its secure mainframe dock.

She caught it in her palm, turned back around, and pressed the heavy drive firmly against her chest, holding it like a shield.

"If this drive contains every second of footage, every private angle, and every invasive file you've compiled of me over the last three months," Khloe said, her voice ringing out clearly across the penthouse, "then it leaves this room the exact same second I do."

Arthur stared at the black metallic drive pressed against her heart, then slowly raised his eyes back to her face. A slow, incredibly faint trace of respect—bordering on dangerous fascination—touched the corners of his mouth.

"And if I tell you no?" Arthur asked, testing the boundaries of her resolve one final time.

Khloe didn't blink, didn't hesitate, and didn't back down.

"Then you'll have to try stopping me," she whispered, stepping past him toward the private elevator. "And trust me, Mr. Declan... you won't like how this floor goes dark the second time."
