Chapter 4 - Dishing Out Justice to the Masters of Deceit

Chaos erupted across the estate.

High-society guests scrambled toward the front gates like rats fleeing a sinking ship, desperate to distance themselves from the unfolding scandal. Influencers frantically tapped at their screens, narrating the live-action drama to hundreds of thousands of shocked online followers. The glittering illusion of the Vance dynasty had completely imploded in less than twenty minutes.

Two female police officers hauled Lila to her feet. She wasn't fighting anymore; her golden hair was matted with tears, her designer silver bikini looking absurdly tragic against the stark reality of police metal. As they dragged her past me toward the squad car waiting outside the iron gates, she raised her tear-stained face, her eyes filled with a venomous, pathetic hatred.

"You ruined everything, Nora!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate shriek. "I was going to give you scraps! I was going to let you live in the guest house for the rest of your life! You’re nothing without me! You’re just a burned-up freak!"

I didn't yell back. I didn't smile or gloat. I simply looked at her with profound, quiet pity—the exact look she had given me from behind high collars and locked doors for ten long years.

"You always thought the world only cared about what was on the surface, Lila," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly in the cool night air. "Enjoy the reality check."

Mother tried to follow the squad car, her high heels clicking frantically against the pavement, screaming hysterically that she had constitutional rights, that her lawyers would destroy the police department, that this was all a terrible mistake. But the second detective gently, firmly blocked her path, informing her that any further interference would result in her immediate arrest for accessory after the fact.

Father didn't move. He sat heavily on the edge of the stone planter box near the pool, his head in his hands, staring blankly at the shattered pieces of crystal champagne glass on the marble floor. The billionaire executive, the untouchable titan of the cosmetics world, looked like a broken, hollowed-out old man.

Arthur Pendelton walked over to me, holding out a soft, warm cashmere shawl. He draped it gently over my bare shoulders, hiding the silver webs of my scars from the cold night breeze.

"You handled that with extraordinary poise, Nora," Arthur said quietly, a warm, genuine smile touching his aged eyes. "Your grandmother would have been profoundly proud of you. She knew what your parents were doing years ago, but she needed irrefutable proof—and a legal heir brave enough to step into the light and claim what was rightfully hers."

I pulled the cashmere shawl tighter around my chest, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like shedding a ten-year-old prison sentence. For the first time in my life, my chest felt light. The phantom weight of the long sleeves, the high collars, and the suffocating isolation was gone, burned away by the truth.

"The board of directors has already called an emergency meeting for 8:00 AM tomorrow," Arthur continued, handing me a thick, fresh leather-bound portfolio. "With Lila disqualified, your parents facing federal indictment, and Grandmother Evelyn’s true will legally enacted, you hold fifty-one percent voting control of Vance Global. You own the company, Nora. Every building, every patent, every cent."

I looked down at the portfolio in my hands. The heavy gold-embossed letters read VANCE GLOBAL: SOLE BENEFICIARY & CHAIRPERSON: NORA VANCE.

"I don't want to run a skincare empire built on lies, Arthur," I said, looking out over the dark, rolling ocean.

Arthur chuckled softly, a rich, reassuring sound. "Who said anything about running it the same way? Your grandmother left a separate codicil in her will—instructions to rebrand the entire corporation into a global philanthropic foundation dedicated to burn survivors, trauma victims, and victims of familial abuse. And she wanted you to lead it."

A slow, genuine smile spread across my face. The nightmare was finally over. And the real journey was just beginning.
