Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Tuesday afternoon arrived with a heavy, grey drizzle typical of late autumn in Ohio. According to his calendar, Cole was currently parked outside Riverside Commons with Meredith. But today, his destination after that visit wouldn't be the office.

At 3:30 PM, two county sheriff deputies, accompanied by my attorney Sarah and a corporate auditor from Cole's company, knocked loudly on the front door of our suburban home. I answered it calmly, holding a sleeping Sophie in my arms. We stepped out onto the front porch just as a moving truck and two unmarked corporate security vehicles pulled up into our driveway.

At 4:15 PM, Cole's SUV pulled into the driveway. He cut the engine, stepped out into the drizzle, and froze the moment he saw his corporate auditor standing next to two sheriff cruisers in his own front yard.

"Paige? What is... what is the meaning of this?" Cole stammered, slamming the car door shut as he hurried up the walkway, his face draining of all color. His eyes darted nervously between the deputies, the auditor holding a thick ledger, and me standing on the porch holding our daughter.

"Welcome home, Cole," I said, my voice steady, carrying an icy resonance that made him stop dead in his tracks. "Or should I say, welcome back from Dublin?"

Cole's jaw slacked. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The panic in his eyes was palpable, a frantic, cornered animal realization that the illusion had completely disintegrated.

"Mr. Callahan," the corporate auditor stepped forward, flashing an official badge and a stack of forensic accounting printouts. "You are being formally terminated from your position at Apex Innovations effective immediately, pending criminal investigation for corporate embezzlement, fraudulent disbursement of company funds totaling over one hundred and forty thousand dollars, and breach of fiduciary duty."

"This... this is a mistake! It's a witch hunt!" Cole shouted, his voice cracking hysterically as he turned toward me. "Paige! Tell them! This is family business, you can't let them—"

"Family business?" I interrupted, stepping forward slightly while keeping Sophie secure against my chest. "You mean like renting an apartment for your pregnant mistress, Meredith Shaw, using our joint savings while I was recovering from childbirth? Or buying welcome sets for a baby boy while pretending to be the devoted husband at home?"

The name Meredith Shaw hit him like a physical blow. He stumbled backward, catching himself on the porch railing. "How... how do you know about that?"

"I'm an expert at uncovering hidden claims, Cole," I replied coldly. "You just left your paper trail right where an exhausted mother doing laundry couldn't possibly miss it."

Sarah Vance stepped up, handing him a thick packet of legal documents bound with a blue backing strip. "These are your divorce papers, emergency asset freeze notifications, and eviction notices from this property, which—as your prenuptial agreement dictates—is held solely in my client's pre-marital trust. You have two hours to pack your personal belongings into a trash bag before the locks are officially changed."

Cole looked around frantically, realizing that his entire life, his career, his marriage, and his stolen comfort had evaporated in less than sixty seconds. He looked at me, his eyes pleading for mercy, but there was nothing left inside me for him. With a defeated slouch of his shoulders, he turned around and walked slowly down the wet driveway as the movers began unloading boxes to clear out his remaining items from the house.
