Chapter 5 - The Long Road Back

The months that followed were a blur of lawyers, social workers, and late-night counseling sessions. The drawings in the shoebox were the turning point. When presented to the court, alongside the testimony of the nanny who had finally found the courage to speak, the facade of the 'perfect family' crumbled.
Adam and Brooke were stripped of custody. It wasn't the victory I had imagined. There was no triumph, only a long, exhausting, and heartbreaking process of trying to put the pieces of a four-year-old’s soul back together.
We moved to a small cottage by the sea, far away from the city, far away from the echoes of the 'loud voice.'
Maisie doesn't draw in charcoal anymore. She uses bright crayons. Yellow suns, blue oceans, green trees. She still has nightmares, and there are days when she won't eat, her tummy hurting from the memory of the fear. But she talks now. She laughs. She tells me she loves me every single night before she falls asleep.

Sometimes, when the wind blows hard against the windows, she flinches. And every time she does, I am there. I hold her, I tell her she is safe, and I promise her that as long as I am breathing, no one will ever silence her again.
We are still a work in progress. But we are ours. And for now, that is more than enough.
