Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Web

The investigation moved swiftly once the forensic lab results returned from the state health department. The authorities requested an emergency meeting at the local precinct, asking Leah, Denise, and me to sit down with lead investigator Detective Vance.
“The casserole tested positive for a high dose of a powerful, long-acting prescription sedative,” Detective Vance announced, sliding a lab report across the metal table. “It wasn't enough to kill outright, but it would have rendered someone unconscious for over twenty-four hours, severely depressing respiration. Combined with an elderly or grieving person living alone, the medical consequences could have been fatal—or at the very least, severe enough to justify emergency hospitalization and immediate placement under a guardian.”
Leah buried her face in her hands, letting out a choked sob. “He wanted you incapacitated so he could present the court with medical incompetence,” she murmured, her voice shaking. “That’s how he planned to seize power over the estate and the house.”

Armed with the lab results, the real estate emails, and Eric’s frantic voicemail to Pat, the district attorney signed an arrest warrant. But Eric wasn't going down quietly. Sensing the walls closing in, he tried to flee town late Friday night, attempting to access David’s primary safety deposit box using forged power-of-attorney documents he had drafted weeks prior.
Instead of a treasure chest, he walked right into a trap set by Detective Vance and local deputies outside the bank. As the cold steel cuffs clicked around Eric’s wrists, he looked across the parking lot and saw Leah and me standing near my car. His face contorted with pure rage, screaming that we had ruined everything, exposing the ugly, desperate core of a man who thought he could outsmart everyone.
