Chapter 3 - The Cold Reception

Fifteen days after I nearly bled to death on the operating table, Vincent Carter returned to our sprawling suburban estate carrying two dozen expensive red roses, expecting to find me upstairs nursing our newborn son and waiting for his royal attention. Instead, our nanny, Mrs. Gable—who had already been briefed on the situation and placed securely on my legal payroll—met him in the grand foyer as he shook the autumn rain from his designer trench coat.
"Mr. Carter," Mrs. Gable said evenly, her voice devoid of its usual warmth as she blocked his path toward the stairs. "Your wife left four days ago."
Vincent stopped dead in his tracks, the long-stemmed roses wobbling in his grip. A bewildered, almost arrogant chuckle escaped his lips as he shook his head. "Left? Don't be ridiculous, Mrs. Gable. She’s recovering from childbirth. Where could she possibly go with a newborn? Is she visiting her mother?"
"She didn't visit her mother, sir," Mrs. Gable replied, stepping aside to reveal the master bedroom suite upstairs, where the door stood wide open, exposing bare closet hangers, empty drawers, and stripped bedsheets. "She packed everything. And she left this for you on your nightstand."
Vincent dropped the roses onto the marble floor, the red petals scattering across the cold stone like drops of fresh blood. He sprinted up the grand staircase two steps at a time, bursting into our bedroom. He rushed to the bedside table, snatched up the small jewelry box, and ripped open the lid. Inside lay the torn halves of our marriage certificate, accompanied by an official legal notice stamped with the seal of the Circuit Court of Cook County: Petition for Dissolution of Marriage, Emergency Asset Freeze, and Forensic Audit.
His cell phone began to vibrate violently in his coat pocket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers. It was his chief financial officer calling from downtown.
"Boss, we have a major emergency!" the CFO shouted through the receiver before Vincent could even speak. "All corporate operating accounts for the restaurant group have been frozen by a court order! The commercial properties are under receivership audit, and the primary venture capital fund just pulled their line of credit!"
"What are you talking about?!" Vincent roared, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson. "Who authorized a freeze?! Get our legal counsel on the phone right now!"

"We tried! Their senior partner is Eleanor Shaw. She’s representing your wife, Mr. Carter. She’s filed motions claiming massive financial fraud, hidden assets, and commingling of pre-marital inheritance. Boss... they've locked us out of the primary vault. We don't even have enough liquid cash to cover payroll on Monday!"
The phone slipped from Vincent’s limp fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor before the battery pack popped out. He stood alone in the empty, silent bedroom, the reality of his utter destruction finally crashing down upon his skull. He had assumed I was weak, dependent, and trapped by motherhood. He had assumed that while he played the billionaire playboy with his mistress in Lake Geneva, I would quietly sit at home nursing our child and weeping over his absence. He had calculated every business risk in his portfolio except for one: the woman he had abandoned in the delivery room was the very person holding the keys to his entire kingdom.
