Chapter 3 - The Reality Check

The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the distant ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Owen’s eyes darted frantically across the legal text, rereading the same paragraph three times as if hoping the words would magically rearrange themselves into something less catastrophic.

"This... this is fake," Owen choked out, his voice cracking violently. He looked up at me, wild-eyed and desperate. "This is a forgery! Beatrice would never leave her estate to you! I am her flesh and blood! I am the only male heir carrying the Merritt name!"

"Beatrice knew your name better than anyone else in this city, Owen," I said quietly, stepping closer to the coffee table. "She knew you were selling off her antique silver behind her back to fund your cryptocurrency losses. She knew you treated me like a servant while you spent your evenings wining and dining Lindsay at country club fundraisers. And most importantly, she knew you had the soul of a parasite."

Lindsay stepped forward, her face twisted in an ugly sneer. "Listen to me, you little gold-digger—this is obviously some scam you cooked up with a shady lawyer. You manipulated an old woman on her deathbed when her mind was slipping!"

"Watch your tone, Lindsay," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the entryway.

We all turned around. Martin Wells stepped through the front door, flanked by two armed county sheriff deputies in full uniform. The polished brass buttons on their jackets gleamed under the hallway chandelier.

Owen stumbled backward, nearly tripping over the coffee table. "Martin? What is the meaning of this? Why are there police officers in my house?"

"It’s not your house, Mr. Merritt," Martin said smoothly, walking into the living room with a briefcase tucked under his arm. He addressed the senior deputy. "Officer, please serve the formal eviction notice and restraining order issued by Judge Harrison this morning."

The deputy stepped forward, holding out a crisp set of official documents. "Owen Merritt, Lindsay Hale. You are hereby ordered to vacate this property within the next sixty minutes. Any attempt to access the premises, tamper with estate accounts, or contact Clara Merritt will result in immediate criminal detention."

"You can't do this!" Lindsay shrieked, her carefully cultivated composure completely shattering into a frantic, hysterical screech. She turned on Owen, her fingernails clawing at his sleeve. "You said the house was yours! You said the money was coming! You lied to me! You told me we were safe!"

"Lindsay, shut up—just shut up for a second!" Owen yelled back, his face purple with humiliation and fury as he glared at me with absolute, venomous hatred. "You think you've won, Clara? You think a bitter, uneducated nobody can run a multi-million-dollar real estate portfolio? You'll bankrupt the company within a month, and when you do, I’ll be waiting to pick over the bones!"

"You won't have time to watch, Owen," I replied, my voice chillingly calm. "Because as of ten minutes ago, the board of directors voted unanimously to strip you of your vice-presidency at Merritt Developments for corporate embezzlement."

Owen froze, his mouth hanging open in sheer horror. He had been so focused on throwing me out before probate cleared that he hadn't even noticed the internal corporate audit Martin had quietly initiated three days prior.
