Chapter 2 - The Fox Guarding the Henhouse

Downstairs in the living room, Julian and Chloe were pouring themselves celebratory glasses of expensive scotch, completely oblivious to the ticking time bomb waiting upstairs.
They sat on the Italian leather sofa, murmuring to each other about how smoothly their scheme was running.
"She bought it," Chloe laughed softly, swirling amber liquid in her crystal glass. "Elena’s always been too arrogant to look beneath the surface. By the end of the month, we'll have the remaining commercial properties transferred, and we can finally put the old lady in that state-funded facility upstate where no one will ever hear her complain."
"We played it perfectly," Julian smirked, adjusting his designer cuffs. "She feels guilty for being absent. Guilt is the greatest leash you can put on a career woman."
They had no idea that upstairs, the leash had just snapped, and a pack of wolves was already sprinting toward their door.
I descended the stairs five minutes later, my expression completely neutral, masking the raging inferno of vengeance burning in my chest. I walked straight into the living room, where Julian and Chloe lounged with effortless arrogance.
"Leaving so soon, dear sister?" Julian mocked, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Decided you'd rather fly back to your high-society friends in the capital instead of playing nursemaid?"
"Actually, Julian," I said, my voice unnervingly calm as I stood near the fireplace, "I was just thinking about all the sacrifices you and Chloe claim to have made. Managing Mom's finances, handling her legal paperwork, sacrificing your personal lives... it must be exhausting."
Chloe rolled her eyes, crossing her arms. "It’s a full-time job, Elena. Not that an absentee workaholic like you would understand what family responsibility means."
"Responsibility," I repeated the word slowly, letting a faint, chilling smile touch the corners of my lips. "Yes. Accountability is a funny thing, Chloe. It always catches up with you, usually right when you think you've won."
Julian frowned, sensing something off in my tone. He set his glass down on the mahogany coffee table with a sharp clink. "What are you talking about, Elena? If you have something to say, spit it out. Don't stand there playing mind games in our house."
"Your house?" I raised an eyebrow, stepping closer to them. "Are you entirely certain whose name is on the deed, Julian?"
"Of course it is!" Julian snapped, standing up defensively. "Mom signed over complete power of attorney and quitclaim deeds three months ago. We own everything. Legally, ethically, lock, stock, and barrel."
"Legally," I said softly, tilting my head. "That’s a fascinating word. Let's see what a federal judge thinks about your definition of legality."
Before Julian could demand an explanation, a sudden, thunderous concussive sound shattered the heavy silence of the night.
CRASH!
The heavy oak front door of the mansion burst inward off its reinforced hinges, splintering into a million pieces as heavy tactical boots stomped onto the hardwood foyer. Shouts echoed through the high-ceilinged hallway.
"Federal Marshal Service! Nobody move! Stay where you are!"
Julian turned white as a sheet, spinning around in utter panic as six heavily armed tactical officers in black ballistic vests and helmets swarmed into the living room, their assault rifles pointed with disciplined precision directly at his chest. Behind them strode two county paramedics and an emergency child-and-elder protection caseworker.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Julian shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak as two marshals slammed him facedown onto the coffee table, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with brutal efficiency. "This is a mistake! I am a pillar of this community! Who authorized this?!"
"I did," I answered, stepping past the agents and looking down at my brother as he writhed beneath a boot.
Chloe screamed, lunging toward her purse on the sofa, but a female marshal tackled her instantly, pinning her arms behind her back and cuffing her within seconds. "You can't do this!" Chloe shrieked, spitting venom as her diamond bracelets clattered uselessly across the floor. "We have rights! This is kidnapping! We'll sue you for everything you're worth!"
May you like
I reached into my blazer pocket, pulled out the printed federal indictment documents, and tossed them carelessly onto the floor beside Julian's spilled scotch.
"Sue me all you want, Chloe," I whispered coldly, leaning down so only they could hear. "But you'll have to do it from a federal maximum-security cell while facing charges of aggravated elder abuse, kidnapping, wire fraud, extortion, and interstate financial embezzlement. Your free ride is officially over."
