Chapter 4 - The Final Trap Springs and the Assets Are Frozen

The ballroom was now entirely silent. Every single eye in the room was locked onto our table. The string quartet had stopped playing altogether. Even Gertrude, sitting in her wheelchair a few feet away, stared blankly ahead in absolute shock, finally realizing that the son she had coddled and spoiled had walked directly into a trap he could never escape.

“Mr. Bennett,” one of the security officers said politely, stepping forward. “Management has requested that you and your guest step outside the ballroom immediately. The local precinct has been notified regarding the fraudulent loan documentation currently logged in our hotel business center's server.”

Tristan looked like a man who had just received a death sentence. He turned his desperate, pleading eyes toward me, his voice trembling uncontrollably. “Laura... please. Thirty years. We built a life together. You can't do this to me. Think of our family! Think of what people will say!”

“You stopped thinking about our family the moment you brought your mistress to our daughter’s wedding and shoved me into the back row,” I said quietly, standing up from my chair and smoothing down the front of my simple blue dress. I didn't look small anymore. Standing beside Charles Sterling, surrounded by my daughter and my new allies, I felt ten feet tall. “And as for what people will say, Tristan? They’ll say you were a greedy, unfaithful coward who tried to steal from his wife and got exactly what he deserved.”

Corinne let out a sharp, hysterical sob, grabbing her designer handbag and attempting to push past the security guards. “This is ridiculous! I’m suing you all! You can't touch me!”

“Actually, Ms. Blake,” a sharp, professional voice chimed in from behind the security officers. Rebecca Shaw, my attorney, stepped into the light holding a thick leather briefcase. “Federal wire fraud and interstate document forgery carry federal sentences. Your personal bank accounts—funded by those very same unauthorized corporate transfers—were frozen by the federal magistrate twenty minutes ago. You won't be suing anyone anytime soon.”

Tristan staggered backward, his legs giving out as he collapsed heavily into the chair Corinne had just vacated. The grand empire he thought he was building—fueled by deceit, arrogance, and theft—had completely collapsed in less than three hours.

Charles reached out, gently placing his hand over mine. “Come on, Laura. Let’s go join the bride and groom on the dance floor. It’s time to celebrate a brand-new beginning.”

As the security guards hoisted Tristan to his feet and escorted him and a screaming Corinne out of the grand ballroom under a chorus of murmurs and camera flashes from wedding guests, I took one last look at the table.

The name card reading BRIDE’S FATHER fluttered softly to the floor as the doors swung shut.
