Chapter 3 - The Morning After and the First Rejected Swipe

By 8:30 AM the next morning, the harsh reality of their new financial universe began to crash down upon Logan and Chloe with the subtlety of a freight train.

They were sitting at their marble-topped kitchen island, sipping imported espresso from matching monogrammed mugs, when Chloe’s phone buzzed with an urgent notification alert from her banking app.

Chloe glanced down at the screen, expecting to see the usual monthly direct deposit notification from Evelyn’s holding trust—the steady stream of cash that funded her weekly spa appointments, boutique shopping sprees, and high-end brunches. Instead, the red notification banner read: TRANSACTION DECLINED. CARD RESTRICTED BY ISSUING INSTITUTION. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR ACCOUNT ADMINISTRATOR.

Chloe frowned, tapping the screen to refresh the app. "That's weird," she muttered, sliding her finger across the screen. "My boutique card just got declined at Saks. Must be some automated fraud alert. Logan, hand me your backup card."

Logan, who was busy scrolling through stock charts on his tablet while wearing a cashmere bathrobe Evelyn had bought him for Christmas, tossed his matte-black titanium card across the counter. "Use mine. It's tied to the primary family reserve. It never declines."

Chloe inserted Logan’s card into the wireless reader on the kitchen counter linked to her mobile app, tapping in her boutique purchase total of twelve hundred dollars.

For three seconds, the terminal whirred. Then, a harsh, buzzer-like beep echoed from the speaker.

DECLINED - INVALID ACCOUNT STATUS.

Logan looked up from his tablet, frowning. "That's impossible. Mom’s account has a half-million-dollar credit ceiling. Let me check my phone."

Logan grabbed his smartphone, unlocked it, and opened his banking portal. As his eyes scanned the interface, all the color instantly drained from his face. His jaw went slack, and his mug slipped an inch from his grip, nearly spilling dark espresso across the white marble.

"Logan? What is it?" Chloe asked, a sudden edge of panic creeping into her voice. "Why is your face white? Did she freeze our cards?"

"Worse," Logan whispered, his voice trembling as he stared at the screen. "Look at the balances. Every single joint account... they’re locked. The recurring monthly transfer... it’s gone. And... and my trustee access to the downtown commercial property trust? It’s been completely revoked."

Chloe stood up so fast her stool screeched loudly against the hardwood floor. "Revoked?! What do you mean revoked?! That's our primary source of passive income! That’s how we pay the mortgage on this house, the property taxes, the country club dues, and my car lease! We can't just live on nothing!"

"I don't know!" Logan shouted, standing up and running both hands frantically through his hair. "She must still be furious about last night! She’s throwing a temper tantrum because we left her out of the dinner seating!"

"A temper tantrum?!" Chloe shrieked, her face turning crimson with rage. "Your mother just cut off our financial oxygen! Call her right now! Call her and tell her to fix this immediately before our mortgage payment bounces tomorrow!"

Logan grabbed his phone with shaking fingers, immediately dialing his mother’s direct cell number.

He waited through three long rings. Then came the automated carrier voice: “The subscriber you have dialed is currently unavailable, or your call cannot be completed as dialed.”

He tried again. Same result. Evelyn had blocked his number completely.

Panic, cold and sharp, began to grip the luxurious kitchen. Chloe paced back and forth across the imported tile floor, her manicured hands trembling. "This is insane! We have a dinner party scheduled with our friends tonight at Le Bernardin! We have a landscaping bill due! We have insurance payments! Logan, your mother can't just cut us off! We are her family!"

"Well, she just did," Logan muttered, staring blankly at his phone screen, finally realizing the horrifying magnitude of what they had provoked.
