Chapter 4 - The Federal Intervention

I didn't have to wait for Monday morning.

While the ballroom descended into chaotic pandemonium—with uncles shouting, aunts weeping, and Derek quietly trying to slip out the side exit only to find the two off-duty deputies blocking the double doors—I pulled my phone from my blazer pocket and dialed a direct, pre-programmed extension.

"Agent Vance, Knoxville FBI Field Office, Financial Crimes Division," a crisp, professional voice answered on the first ring.

"Special Agent Miller, this is Ayla Vance," I announced clearly into the receiver, making sure Marcus could hear every word. "I am standing on the stage at the Cherokee Country Club. The suspect, Marcus Vance, and his primary co-conspirator, Derek Holloway, are currently contained on-site. I have the complete physical evidence binder, including the forged property liens, offshore wire transfer receipts, and the trust embezzlement ledgers ready for immediate forensic transfer."

Agent Miller’s tone shifted instantly into tactical overdrive. "Understood, Ms. Vance. Secure the perimeter. We have units five minutes out from West Town Parkway. Do not let either individual leave the property."

"Copy that. They aren't going anywhere."

I clicked end and slid the phone back into my pocket.

Marcus looked at me with a gaze devoid of parental warmth—just the cold, desperate calculation of a trapped animal. "You called the FBI? To your own father’s family celebration? You have completely destroyed our family."

"You destroyed it, Dad," I said calmly, zipping my leather briefcase shut with a satisfying zip. "I just filed the paperwork."

Within six minutes, the wail of sirens pierced the quiet Knoxville evening. Two unmarked federal vehicles and a marked Knox County patrol cruiser roared up the country club’s circular drive, their blue and red strobes painting the crystal chandeliers in flashing crimson and indigo.

Four federal agents marched through the double doors, cutting a direct path through the stunned crowd of guests. Agent Miller led the way, flashing his badge directly at Marcus before looking at me.

"Ms. Vance?"

"Right here, Agent Miller." I picked up the leather briefcase and handed it directly into his waiting hands. "Everything is organized chronologically. Exhibit A through J. Forged deeds, trust embezzlement, interstate wire fraud, and subornation of perjury."

Agent Miller opened the case, glanced briefly at the certified forensic accounting summaries, and nodded with professional appreciation. "Thorough work. As always." He signaled to the two agents behind him. "Take Mr. Vance and Mr. Holloway into custody."

"Don't touch me! I demand to speak to my attorney!" Marcus shouted as two pairs of heavy federal agents grabbed his arms, spinning him around and slapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a cold, metallic snap.

Derek tried to run toward the kitchen service doors, but a Knox County deputy intercepted him halfway, sweeping his legs out and slamming him against the wall before clicking cuffs onto his wrists as well.

As Marcus was dragged down the center aisle—past the tables of horrified relatives, past the weeping Briana, and past Grandma Beatatrice, who sat regally with her chin held high—he threw one final, venomous glare in my direction.

"You'll never work in corporate finance again after this," he spat out. "I'll make sure of it."

"Dad," I called out softly as the agents pushed him toward the exit, "I'm a senior forensic risk analyst. Exposing white-collar criminals is literally what I get paid six figures to do. You just happened to be the most amateur fraudster I've ever audited."
