Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Moretti Empire

The mahogany conference table in the penthouse suite overlooking Boston Harbor bore the scars of decades of whispered threats, blood money, and deals sealed in smoke. At the head of the table sat Lorenzo Moretti. At forty-two, his face was carved from granite and old Italian marble—sharp jaw, eyes the color of a winter sea, and a presence that could silence a room of thirty hardened soldiers with a single, unblinking glance.

He didn't yell. Men who yelled were weak. Lorenzo simply tapped a silver signet ring against the dark wood, the metallic clack echoing off the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"Twenty-four hours," Lorenzo said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated in the chests of the four capos standing before him. "And my son was left wandering the docks like a stray dog. Salvator, you handled the security detail for the North End exchange. Explain to me why a six-year-old boy ended up in the mud behind a rotting fish market."

Salvator, a hulking mass of muscle wrapped in an Armani suit, swallowed hard. Sweat beaded on his forehead, catching the amber glow of the crystal chandelier. "Boss, we think it was the O’Leary crew trying to squeeze us for the shipping lanes. They hit the car when the nanny stopped for—"

"I don't care what you think," Lorenzo interrupted, leaning forward. His gaze was terrifyingly calm. "I care about facts. I care about blood. My son, Leo, is safe only because a stranger—a ghost, a woman living off discarded cardboard—decided to pull him out of the fire. A woman who called from a public landline at St. Bridget’s and refused to give her name until I promised not to send my men with guns."

Lorenzo stood up, buttoning his vest. He walked to the window, watching the rain streak the glass. He remembered the phone call an hour ago. The voice on the other end had been raspy, exhausted, shivering from the cold, yet carrying an unshakeable spine. She hadn't asked for money. She hadn't demanded protection. She had simply said, “He’s cold. Bring him dry clothes,” before hanging up.

"Find her," Lorenzo commanded without turning around. "Every camera from the harbor to the church. Every witness. I want to know who walked out of the fog and handed me back my world. And when you find her, bring her to me. Gently."
