Six months later, the Minnesota air was crisp and clean.
Stella sat in her office, high above the city, looking out at the skyline—a skyline that featured several buildings currently being managed by her firm. Her daughters were in the next room, busy with their homework, their faces bright and unburdened by the weight of their grandmother's expectations.
Her phone buzzed. It was a legal update: Gavin had filed for bankruptcy, and the catering company had successfully obtained a wage garnishment against his new, significantly smaller position. Meredith was reportedly living in a small, cramped apartment in Wisconsin, stripped of the social status she had spent a lifetime guarding.
Stella reached out and touched the photograph on her desk—a picture of her and her daughters, laughing in the park, with no one there to tell them they were "less than."
