Chapter 1 - The Fragile Veneer

The private hangar at the Toluca airport was bathed in the harsh, late-afternoon sun of Central Mexico. The tarmac shimmered with heat rising from the asphalt, mirroring the slow-burning tension that had settled in Ricardo Galván’s chest the moment his Gulfstream G650 touched down. For three months, he had lived out of luxury hotels in Madrid, Munich, and Dubai, orchestrating the global expansion of his artificial intelligence firm. He had secured contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars, yet none of those victories felt as heavy or as urgent as the simple desire to hold his seven-year-old son, Diego.

But the woman waiting for him beside the armored black SUV had already set a chilling tone before he could even unbuckle his seatbelt. Valeria stood like a monument to high-society perfection. Her Chanel sunglasses caught the glare of the sun, her designer handbag was tucked neatly under her arm, and her signature French perfume hung in the air so thick it felt like an physical barrier. She didn’t offer a smile of welcome. Instead, her greeting was a warning.

"If he seems a little strange, don’t hug him too hard," Valeria said, her voice sharp and dismissive as she tapped the screen of her phone. "He’s in a bad mood, and I don’t want you causing a scene here."

Ricardo’s jaw tightened. He ignored her entirely, his eyes sweeping past her to find his boy. Diego was standing near the rear door of the SUV. At first glance, he looked like a miniature aristocrat destined for a Polanco magazine cover. He wore a tailored, dark navy suit, his leather loafers were polished to a mirror shine, and his crisp white shirt was buttoned tightly all the way to his throat. But the posture was all wrong. A child greeting his father after ninety days apart should have been a blur of motion, a chorus of excited laughter. Diego stood rigid, his chin pressed hard against his chest, his shoulders hunched inward as if trying to shrink into the fabric of his expensive clothes.

"Champ," Ricardo said, dropping to one knee on the hot concrete to bring himself to eye level with his son. "I’m back. I missed you so much, Diego."

Diego’s small hands, tucked against the seams of his trousers, trembled visibly. He slowly lifted his head, but his eyes were glassy, unfocused, and dark with a deep, haunting exhaustion. He swallowed hard but didn't speak.

Ricardo, his heart aching at the sight, reached out to pull his boy into a warm, long-awaited embrace. The moment his palms made light contact with the fabric covering Diego's upper back, the boy didn't lean in. Instead, he let out a sharp, ragged gasp and violently flinched backward as if his skin had been touched by a white-hot iron.

"Ow…" Diego whispered, a tear immediately escaping his glassy eyes and cutting a clean path through the faint layer of sweat on his pale cheek.

Valeria clicked her tongue in irritation, stepping forward and crossing her arms. "See? Nothing but drama. Ever since you left, he’s become absolutely impossible. He cries at everything, he refuses to eat what the chef prepares, and he throws tantrums whenever I try to dress him for social events."

Ricardo rose slowly, his towering frame casting a shadow over his ex-wife. "He is seven years old, Valeria. He doesn't flinch like that from drama. What is going on with him?"

"I told you, he's just seeking attention because you've been gone," she snapped, gesturing for the driver to open the passenger doors. "Get in. We have a charity gala committee meeting at the house in an hour, and I don't have time to stand on the runway debating your overprotective parenting."

The drive from Toluca to their sprawling estate in Lomas de Chapultepec was an exercise in pure torture. Throughout the entire forty-five-minute journey, Diego refused to sit on the plush leather seats of the SUV. He stood in the narrow footwell, his small hands desperately gripping the overhead passenger handrail. His legs were spread in an awkward, wide stance, and his breathing was shallow. Heavy beads of sweat rolled down his forehead, soaking his slicked-back hair, yet he shivered continuously despite the warm afternoon air.

"Diego, please, sit down. It’s not safe to stand while we’re driving," Ricardo urged gently, reaching out to touch the boy's shoulder.

"I’m fine like this, Papa," Diego muttered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the engine. He wouldn't look at his father. His eyes remained locked on the floorboards, filled with a quiet, terrifying compliance.

Valeria ignored the boy entirely. She spent the entire ride on active phone calls, loudly coordinating florists, caterers, and photographers for an upcoming publicity shoot that would feature her and Diego for a major Mexican lifestyle magazine. Her voice was vibrant, full of life and false warmth—a grotesque contrast to the silent, agonizing suffering occurring just inches away from her.

When they finally arrived at the massive, gated mansion in Lomas, Ricardo carried several large, brightly wrapped toy boxes into the formal living room. They were building sets and robotics kits he had personally sourced from high-end boutiques in London.

"Look, champ. I know how much you wanted to build that replica castle," Ricardo said, trying to inject some warmth into the cold, marble-floored room. "Let’s sit down on the rug and open it together."

For a fleeting second, a spark of genuine childhood wonder flickered in Diego's eyes. But before he could reach out, Valeria’s shadow fell over them.

"Make it quick, Ricardo," she said, checking her gold watch. "The photographer is arriving soon, and I need him in his fresh linen suit. Sit down and play with your father so we can get this over with."

Diego’s body stiffened. He looked at his mother, then at the floor. With agonizing slowness, he began to bend his knees, lowering his body toward the thick wool carpet. The moment his backside made contact with the floor, a guttural, choked scream tore from his throat. He didn't just wince; his entire body gave out. He collapsed onto his side, his knees pulling tightly toward his chest as he began to sob uncontrollably, his small hands clawing at the carpet fibers.

"Diego!" Ricardo roared, throwing the toy boxes aside and dropping to the floor.

"Oh, for heaven’s sake, Ricardo!" Valeria threw her hands up, rolling her eyes toward the high ceiling. "He is doing this entirely for your benefit! He just wants attention!"

"Shut up, Valeria!" Ricardo bellowed, a primal fury taking over.

With trembling, frantic hands, Ricardo grabbed the edge of Diego's polished leather belt and loosened it. He began to unbutton the stiff, dark trousers to check for a sprain or a bruise. The moment the fabric parted, a horrific, foul odor billowed into the air. It was a sour, sharp, and unmistakably biological scent—the unmistakable smell of deep, untreated infection, old sweat, and chemical burns.

Ricardo froze. He gently pulled down the boy's undergarments. What he saw beneath the flawless, expensive exterior made his stomach heave and his vision blur with rage.

Diego's lower abdomen, thighs, and buttocks were covered in a horrific mosaic of raw, peeling skin, deep friction ulcers, and angry, yellowing chemical burns. The skin was swollen, oozing with infection, and stuck painfully to the inner lining of his trousers. The elegant clothes had been forced over open, weeping wounds.

"Call nine-one-one!" Ricardo screamed, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and absolute fury. "Now!"

Valeria’s face, previously flushed with irritation, drained of all color. She took a step back, her expensive handbag slipping from her fingers and hitting the marble floor with a dull thud.

"I... I thought it was just minor chafing," she stammered, her voice suddenly small, her perfect high-society facade fracturing to reveal a hollow, panicked core. "He... he was just being dramatic..."

Ricardo didn't wait for her to call. He scooped Diego gently into his arms, ignoring the biological stains and yellow fluid that immediately seeped onto his custom-tailored white shirt. He held his son close, feeling the boy’s rapid, thumping heartbeat against his chest.

As he strode past Valeria toward the front door, his eyes locked onto hers with a cold, lethal promise.

"Wait for me in this house," Ricardo whispered, his voice dangerously calm. "Because this is just the beginning of what I am going to do to you."
