Chapter 4 - The Reckoning of Vanguard

The walls of Ethan’s empire did not fall with a crash; they crumbled in a series of quiet, devastating emails.

Within forty-eight hours of the court hearing, the forensic audit had leaked to Vanguard’s primary investors. The revelation of the Cayman Islands accounts, coupled with the pending criminal investigation into tax evasion that Clara’s team had quietly handed to the state prosecutor, caused a mass exodus.
Ethan sat in his mahogany-paneled office, staring at the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. The office was quiet. The phones had stopped ringing because there was no one left to answer them. The receptionist had quit that morning after her paycheck bounced.
The door clicked open.
Ethan spun around, expecting Chloe. But it was Clara.
She walked in slowly, carrying a leather briefcase. She looked around the office with a faint, almost pitying smile.
"What are you doing here?" Ethan rasped, his voice hoarse. "You’ve destroyed my company. You’ve taken my money. You won’t let me see my son. What more do you want, Clara?"
"I want you to sign the settlement," Clara said, placing a single document on his desk. "If you sign this, I will instruct my legal team to recommend leniency to the state prosecutor regarding the tax evasion charges. You’ll serve probation instead of prison time."
"And if I don't?" Ethan sneered, trying to summon the old, intimidating authority he used to hold over her. "I’ll fight you, Clara. I’ll drag this out for years. I’ll make sure you don't get a single penny."
Clara took a step forward, leaning over his desk. The warmth in her eyes was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, brilliant fire.
"With what money, Ethan?" she asked softly. "Your investors pulled out this morning. The bank is foreclosing on this building next month. Chloe’s lawyers have already contacted me—she’s offering to testify against you in exchange for immunity regarding the offshore transfers. You are entirely alone."
Ethan looked at the document. It stripped him of the house, the remaining business assets, and gave him absolutely no custody rights to Leo.
"You're a monster," Ethan whispered, tears of rage and desperation spilling over his eyelids.
"No," Clara corrected him, her voice steady and calm. "I am a mother. And you should have known better than to leave us in the cold."

She turned and walked toward the door. As her hand touched the brass handle, she paused, looking back over her shoulder.
"The movers are at the house right now, Ethan. Don't bother going back there. The locks have already been changed."
