Chapter 5 - A New Horizon

The air in the coastal town of Cape May was crisp and smelled of salt.

Six months had passed since the final divorce decree was signed. The scandal that had rocked the local real estate market had faded from the headlines, replaced by newer, fresher tragedies. Vanguard Developments was gone, its assets liquidated to pay off creditors and the massive settlement awarded to Clara.
Clara stood on the porch of a modest, shingle-style cottage overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm, brilliant pink and gold light across the water.
Inside the house, she could hear the soft, bubbling laughter of Leo, who was now a healthy, thriving nine-month-old, playing on the rug with Sarah, who had driven down for the weekend.
Clara’s phone buzzed in her pocket. It was an email notification.
She opened it to find a news alert. Ethan’s name was listed in the local legal gazette. He had officially filed for personal bankruptcy, his name dragged through the mud, his reputation shattered beyond repair. He was currently working as an entry-level leasing agent in a town three states away, living in a cramped, one-bedroom apartment.
Clara stared at the screen for a moment. She felt no anger. She felt no triumph. She felt only a profound, beautiful sense of peace.
She locked the screen and slipped the phone back into her pocket.
"Clara!" Sarah called out from the living room. "Leo just figured out how to roll over all the way to the sofa! You need to see this!"

Clara smiled, a real, genuine smile that reached her eyes. She turned her back on the ocean, stepping through the doorway and into the warm, bright light of her new life.
She closed the door behind her, locking out the cold forever.
