Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Fraud

Cassiana went completely pale, the artificial warmth of her spray tan contrasting sharply against the sudden, ghastly ash of her skin. Her manicured fingers trembled visibly as she looked down at the open pages of the navy-blue ledger resting on the glass table.

"What... what is this?!" she stammered, her voice losing its previous shrill confidence and cracking with sudden, genuine panic. "You... you're trying to trick me with some fake paperwork! Mom! Mom, get over here, Lysandra is acting insane!"

Before Cassiana could reach for her phone to summon reinforcements, I calmly placed my palm flat over the ledger, anchoring it to the table. As a certified public accountant with a specialization in corporate forensic investigations, numbers never lied, even when the people whispering them into your ear were pathological liars.

"Look closer, Cassiana," I instructed smoothly, tapping my pen against a highlighted line item near the top of page forty-two. "This isn't a trick. This is a comprehensive forensic audit of your brother’s architectural firm, combined with a forensic trace of every joint bank account we shared during our marriage. Did you really think Thaddius was a financial genius who could afford to buy you an eighty-five-thousand-dollar Mercedes-Benz outright on a whim?"

Her lips parted, but no sound came out. Her eyes darted frantically across the columns of figures, tracking the red ink notations I had meticulously prepared.

"Let me break it down for you, since basic arithmetic clearly eludes this family," I continued, leaning in slightly, maintaining unblinking eye contact. "Two months ago, Thaddius's firm lost its primary commercial contract with the municipal transit authority. By last month, his operating accounts were sitting at a negative balance of over forty-two thousand dollars. He couldn't even pay his sub-contractors, let alone buy you a German luxury vehicle with cash or a legitimate corporate loan."

"That's a lie!" Cassiana shrieked, though the volume lacked conviction, drawing curious, sideways glances from a nearby salesman holding a tablet. "Thaddius is rich! He's a successful businessman! He promised me this car for my twenty-fifth birthday present, and you're just bitter because he dumped you for a younger woman!"

"He didn't dump me, Cassiana. I filed for desertion and financial malfeasance," I corrected her coldly, turning a page in the ledger to reveal a stark, undeniable piece of evidence. "When Thaddius realized he couldn't get a legitimate auto loan without a co-signer—and knowing full well I would never approve a cent for your vanity project—he decided to take matters into his own hands. Three days ago, while I was out of town attending a CPA convention, he accessed our home office safe, retrieved my personal identification documents, and forged my signature on a fraudulent spousal guarantee form to secure this exact dealership transaction."

The color drained entirely from Cassiana's face, leaving her looking like a ghost caught in broad daylight. Her hands flew up to cover her mouth as the staggering legal implications began to crash over her like a rogue wave.

"Forgery," I whispered softly, letting the word hang heavily in the air between us. "Federal wire fraud, identity theft, and uttering a forged instrument. Those aren't civil matters, Cassiana. Those are Class 4 felonies in the state of Illinois. Carrying mandatory prison time."

At that exact moment, the private glass doors of the dealership's main office swung open, and the senior finance manager strode out, holding a sleek leather folder with a wide, professional smile plastered across his face.

"Ah, Miss Cassiana! Perfect timing," the manager announced brightly, walking directly toward our table. "We have finalized the final credit verification packet using the primary guarantor's electronic authorization submitted by your brother. All we need now is the final funding confirmation or the cashier's check release from your former sister-in-law, and we can pull the vehicle right onto the delivery floor for your livestream!"

The manager stopped dead in his tracks as he noticed the tense, suffocating atmosphere at the table. He looked down at Cassiana, who was now shaking uncontrollably, and then over at me, sitting upright with absolute, unshakeable composure.

"Is there a problem with the funds?" the manager asked, his professional smile faltering as he sensed the palpable hostility in the air.

"Oh, there's no problem with the funds at all," I replied, offering the manager a polite, corporate smile that didn't reach my eyes. In fact, I reached into my tote bag once more and pulled out a heavy, official manila envelope bearing the red stamp of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, along with a certified copy of the police report I had filed an hour before walking through those front doors. "There are just a few minor documentation discrepancies that need to be addressed immediately before anyone signs anything else."
