Chapter 2 - The Fall and the Betrayal

"Oh, no you don't!" Ethan roared, grabbing for my wrist. "You're going to sign it right now!"

"Ethan, get away from me!" I yelled, yanking my arm back and stumbling backward away from the coffee table.

My pregnant body was already off-balance, and my foot caught sharply against the heavy edge of an oriental rug. In a fraction of a second, gravity took over. I pitched sideways, crashing hard onto the unforgiving marble floor with a sickening thud that knocked the wind straight out of my lungs.

A blinding, white-hot cramp instantly ripped through my lower abdomen, sharp and agonizing.

Then, worse than the pain, I felt it. A sudden, warm rush of liquid spreading across the fabric of my dress.

I froze, terror gripping my heart as the clinical reality set in. I was only eight months along. It was way too early.

"Ethan..." I gasped, my voice breaking into a terrified sob as I clutched my stomach. "My water... my water just broke."

For one agonizing second, the entire room stood utterly paralyzed. Ethan stared down at his hands as if he didn't realize how hard he had pushed me. Chloe pressed a manicured hand over her mouth, her eyes wide with sudden panic.

Then Chloe whispered a terrified denial. "Oh my God... she's faking it. She's trying to ruin the wedding week."

My father didn't rush to my side. He didn't ask if I was okay. Instead, his face hardened with cold annoyance, and he grabbed Ethan firmly by the shoulder, pulling him toward the private elevator foyer. "Come on, Ethan. Leave her be. She's throwing a hysterical fit."

Mom didn't hesitate either. She scooped up her designer handbag from the sofa, stepping right past my crumpled body on the marble floor as if I were a piece of trash blocking her path.

"Call an ambulance!" I screamed out in absolute agony, tears streaming down my face as another violent contraction wracked my body. "Please... something is wrong!"

Mom paused at the elevator doors, looking back at me with absolute contempt. "You always make everything so damn dramatic, Claire. Get up and deal with it yourself."

Ding.

The private elevator doors slid open. My family walked inside, stepped away from their daughter and sister lying in a pool of amniotic fluid on the floor, and pressed the lobby button. The doors closed shut, sealing them away in their cold, calloused indifference.

I lay there on the cold stone, gasping for breath, the pain radiating through my spine. I was entirely alone, terrified, and slipping toward shock.

Two minutes.

Only two minutes passed while I curled into a ball on the floor, praying my baby would hold on.

Suddenly, a loud, urgent knock echoed from my heavy front mahogany door.

Not a polite visitor knock. A heavy, official, law-enforcement pounding.

"Ms. Claire Morgan?" a deep, authoritative male voice called out from the hallway, followed by the jingle of tactical gear. "Open up! This is Special Agent Daniel Reeves, Federal Bureau of Investigation. We need to speak with you immediately regarding an urgent matter concerning fraudulent property transfers!"

I blinked through my tears, staring blankly at the manila deed-transfer folder lying open on the marble floor just inches from my hand.

And right through the blinding waves of physical pain and maternal terror, a sudden, chilling clarity washed over me. I finally understood something my arrogant, scheming family was completely, catastrophically blind to.

They hadn't just targeted the wrong woman.

In their desperate greed, they had just signed their legal names to a federal crime.
