Chapter 3 - The Federal Intervention

"Ms. Morgan? Can you hear me?" Special Agent Daniel Reeves called out again, his voice urgent as the heavy banging on the door continued. "We have a warrant-backed inquiry regarding wire fraud and identity falsification tied to this address!"
Using every ounce of remaining strength, I dragged myself across the slippery marble floor, leaving a damp trail behind me, and reached up to flip the heavy deadbolt lock. I pulled the door open just enough to reveal myself crumpled on the entryway rug, clutching my stomach, tears cutting tracks through the dust on my face.
Special Agent Reeves—a tall, sharp-eyed man in a tailored charcoal suit with federal credentials flashing in his hand—dropped to his knees instantly. His professional demeanor vanished, replaced by sheer shock.
"Good lord! Ma'am, what happened?" Reeves barked over his shoulder to two armed federal agents standing behind him in the hallway. "Call EMS right now! Code red, pregnant female down, expedite transport!"
As one of the agents frantically spoke into a tactical radio, Agent Reeves carefully placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Claire? Can you look at me? An ambulance is two minutes away. What happened here?"
"My... my family," I gasped out between ragged breaths, pointing a shaking finger toward the marble living room floor where the manila folder lay abandoned. "They... they forced me. They brought fraudulent deed-transfer papers... trying to steal my property."
Agent Reeves’s eyes followed my finger to the table. He stood up, walked over, and picked up the manila folder using an evidence glove he pulled from his pocket. He scanned the first page, and a grim, knowing smile touched the corners of his mouth.
"Well, Ms. Morgan," Reeves said quietly, walking back toward me. "It looks like your family’s timing couldn't possibly be more incriminating. Our cyber-fraud division has been tracking a sophisticated interstate real estate identity-theft ring for six months. The mastermind behind this particular shell company network used a forged notary stamp to target high-value Manhattan properties. And right here on this document your brother forced you to sign—or attempted to—is the registered corporate routing number of the exact dummy corporation we’ve been investigating."
Before I could process the staggering weight of his words, a distant wail of sirens began to echo up from the New York streets below.
"Agent Reeves..." I squeezed my eyes shut as another brutal contraction tore through my body. "My water broke... ten minutes ago. I need to get to New York Presbyterian Hospital right now."
Reeves’s face turned dead serious. He pulled out his radio. "All units, medic team is entering the building now. Prepare for immediate emergency transport of the resident. And secure that paperwork on the coffee table as primary physical evidence in Case 88-B."

Within minutes, emergency medical technicians burst through my front door with a gurney, strapping me in while slapping an oxygen mask over my face. As they wheeled me past the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the private elevator, Agent Reeves walked alongside me, holding my hand firmly.
"Don't you worry about a single thing, Claire," he whispered softly, his voice full of grim determination. "Your family wanted to play games with federal property titles. Let's see how they enjoy explaining a felony mortgage fraud scheme while you're having your baby."
