Chapter 3 - The Forged Signature and the Trap Closing In

The responding officer looked from me, to Lucas, and then down at the official documents in his hand. He didn't flinch at my father’s commanding tone.

"Sir, the vehicle registration and title are in Elina’s name," the officer stated clearly into the open speaker.

Dad’s voice sharpened with aggressive arrogance, completely blind to the legal trap he was stepping into. "Not anymore! Check the glove compartment, Officer. I prepared the transfer papers myself this morning before I dropped the keys off."

Across the parking lot, Lucas’s eyes lit up with sudden, desperate hope. He lunged impulsively toward the open driver’s door, reaching inside toward the glove box.

"Stay right where you are!" the officer commanded, stepping forward with a sharp, authoritative tone that froze Lucas mid-motion.

The officer didn't let Lucas touch anything. Instead, he reached into the glove compartment himself, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and slid out a crisp, folded piece of paper.

Through the open speaker on my phone, Dad let out a smug, self-satisfied little laugh.

"There," Dad crowed triumphantly. "She signed it over to him this morning. It’s a legal gift transfer form."

The officer unfolded the paper under the glow of the parking lot lights. It was a notarized state vehicle gift transfer form. At the very bottom, in neat, looping cursive, was printed my full name: Elina Santana.

Right beneath it was a signature.

I stared at the page, a cold fury rising in my chest. I had been at my desk downtown since 7:30 AM. I had never signed this document. I had never visited a notary public. I had never agreed to give away my car.

And as I looked closer, I saw the fatal flaw: whoever had forged my signature had completely misspelled my middle name, and the handwriting looked suspiciously shaky, resembling my father’s messy, hurried script.

Before the officer could even point out the discrepancy, Dad’s voice boomed proudly through the phone speaker, sealing his fate for all the world to hear.

"I signed your name for you, Elina," Dad bragged, completely unaware of the legal nightmare he had just unlocked. "I knew you’d be selfish and dramatic about it, so I handled the paperwork myself. It’s totally legal between family!"

Silence descended upon the parking lot.

The officer slowly raised his head from the forged document and turned his gaze directly toward Lucas. Then, without breaking eye contact, he reached down to his shoulder mic, keyed his radio, and requested backup and a detective unit for a felony fraud and grand theft in progress.

Lucas’s knees buckled slightly. "Wait... wait a minute, officer. My dad was just trying to help—"

"Shut your mouth," the officer warned, pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "You are driving on a suspended license in a stolen vehicle possessing fraudulent transfer documents. Put your hands behind your back."

As the steel cuffs clicked shut around Lucas’s wrists, my phone was still active on speaker.

"Hello? Elina? Are you listening to me?" Dad’s voice crackled through the speaker, growing frantic as he heard the distant sirens approaching. "Why are those sirens in the background? What is happening?"

I leaned down, brought the phone close to my lips, and spoke with absolute, crystal-clear calm.

"Congratulations, Dad," I said softly. "You just confessed to felony forgery and grand theft on a recorded police line. I hope it was worth it."
