Chapter 2 - The Federal Intervention and the Streaming Evidence

Suddenly, the door swung open hard enough to make Brenda flinch. Dr. Miller stepped inside, his white coat still half unbuttoned. Two hospital security officers followed him, while a police officer stood directly in the doorway, blocking the only way out. Dr. Miller didn't look at Alyssa. He didn't look at the bracelet either. His eyes went straight to my father. “Nobody leaves this room,” he said.
Charles immediately put on the smooth, practiced smile he used with bankers and charity board members. He asked whether there was some kind of problem, as though he hadn't just thrown his recovering daughter out of her home while she was still lying in a hospital bed. Dr. Miller pointed toward the small camera mounted above my monitor, a device I had barely noticed through the haze of anesthesia. “This suite has a clinical recording camera,” he explained. “Your visit has been streaming directly to our legal department since you entered the room.”
My father looked up. The color drained from his face so quickly that Brenda instinctively grabbed his sleeve. The police officer stepped forward, and suddenly the hallway beyond him felt colder, wider, and completely alert. Dr. Miller lowered his voice. “She has not been medically cleared to leave, and the recording captured you attempting to evict a critical donor while she was recovering from surgery.”
Charles opened his mouth, but the officer raised one hand and stopped him. Then Dr. Miller glanced toward Brenda’s phone before turning his attention back to my father. “Before you call her useless again,” he said, “you should know what else we found.” The entire room fell into a terrified, breathless hush. Dr. Miller signaled to the police officer, who stepped aside to let a federal investigator in a dark suit enter the suite.
“Charles Montgomery,” the investigator announced, pulling out a laminated badge. “You are being detained for questioning regarding interstate medical fraud, coercion of organ donation, and systematic financial exploitation of a protected dependent.” Brenda dropped her phone; it hit the linoleum floor with a sharp crack, the screen shattering instantly. Alyssa let out a high-pitched, childish shriek, clutching her freshly operated abdomen.

“This is an absolute outrage!” Charles sputtered, his voice cracking as panic finally broke through his arrogant facade. “I am a pillar of this community! My company funds half the research foundations in this city!”
“Your company,” Dr. Miller interrupted coldly, “is currently being raided by federal marshals. And as for your medical fraud? Well, let's just say that clinical camera didn't just record your pleasant family visit today. It also recorded the forged consent documents you filed last month.”
