Chapter 1 - THE PUSH

The helicopter door slid open and the wind tore Veronika's veil loose, whipping it against the horizon. She laughed, reaching up to catch it, and for one perfect second she felt twenty years younger than her sixty-five years.

"Careful," Alex said behind her, his voice soft against the rotor noise.

She turned to smile at him. Below them the ocean spread out in sheets of hammered silver, and somewhere on the mainland her guests were still drinking champagne to a marriage that had, an hour earlier, been sealed in ink by a notary on her private island.

"Now we are a family," she had told Alex only minutes before, her voice thick with something she hadn't let herself feel in fifteen years.

He had smiled back. She hadn't noticed, in the moment, that the smile carried no warmth at all.

Now, at the open door, Alex asked the pilot for one more photograph — the newlyweds against the clouds. Veronika stepped closer to the edge, one hand braced on the frame, laughing into the wind.

His hands found her shoulder blades.

She didn't understand the pressure at first — thought it was turbulence, thought it was Alex steadying her. Then the horizon tilted sideways and the cabin was gone and there was only sky, only the scream she didn't have time to finish, only the terrible silence of falling.

Alex watched the clouds swallow her. He counted to ten. Then he sat back down, straightened his jacket, and told the pilot there had been a terrible accident — that his wife had lost her balance reaching for her veil.

He did not know, as the helicopter banked back toward the mainland, that eleven miles below, a private fishing trawler had been running its nets exactly where her body would fall, or that its captain had spent thirty years learning how to keep dying things alive until the coast guard arrived.

He did not know that the notary who had witnessed the wedding vows that morning was, at that very moment, driving to a police station with a folder he had been paid, six months earlier, never to open.

Alex smiled the whole flight home.
