Chapter 9 - WHAT WAS COMING FOR HIM

The gala's follow-up event was smaller, more intimate — a private dinner Alex had arranged to thank his largest new business partners, the shell company chief among them. He stood at the head of the table in a tailored jacket, mid-toast, when the doors at the far end of the ballroom opened.

Veronika walked in wearing the same shade of blue she had worn the day they met at that first charity event, three years and one ocean ago. The room went silent in stages, the way water goes still before a storm — first the nearest guests, then the waiters, then Alex himself, whose champagne glass slipped from his hand and shattered against the marble floor.

"You're dead," he said. It came out as a whisper before he could stop it.

"I was," Veronika said. "For about nine minutes, according to the men who pulled me out of the ocean. Long enough, apparently, for you to spend a fortune you never actually inherited."

Two police detectives stepped through the same doorway behind her, flanked by Ingrid and a folder now three inches thick.

"Alexander Marsh," one of them said, "you're under arrest for attempted murder, insurance fraud, and forgery of estate documents."

Alex looked at the folder. He looked at the detectives. He looked, finally, at Veronika, standing steady on legs that had once been shattered by the same fall he had engineered, and understood — all at once, the way men like him always understood things too late — that she had never needed his love to survive. Only his mistakes.
