Chapter 1 - THE SMILE AT THE DOOR

Adrian Cole entered the mansion smiling as though nothing in his life could possibly go wrong.

His tailored black suit was immaculate, his hair neatly styled, and the leather folder beneath his arm contained the final documents he expected his wife to sign before dinner. Once her signature appeared on those pages, Adrian would control the remaining shares of Hawthorne Industries, the mansion, and every property connected to her late mother’s trust.

He had spent six years preparing for that moment.

“Evelyn?” he called as he stepped into the foyer. “I brought champagne.”

His voice carried through the silent house.

Then he saw her.

Evelyn stood at the foot of the staircase in a plain black dress. Her long dark hair fell over one shoulder, but it did not hide the purple bruise across her cheek.

Behind her stood a silver-haired man in a dark suit.

Adrian’s smile vanished.

Charles Hawthorne had not been inside that house since the day Evelyn married Adrian. According to Adrian, Charles had disowned his daughter after the wedding and wanted nothing more to do with her.

Yet there he was, standing close enough to protect her.

Charles’s eyes moved from Adrian’s face to the folder beneath his arm.

“Put the documents down,” he said.

Adrian recovered quickly. “This is a private matter between my wife and me.”

“Not anymore.”

Evelyn said nothing. Her eyes remained fixed on Adrian, and that frightened him more than tears would have. Usually, one cold look or raised voice was enough to make her apologize.

That afternoon, she looked exhausted—but no longer afraid.

Adrian forced a laugh. “Evelyn fell in the bathroom. She has always been careless.”

Charles stepped around her.

“My daughter told me what happened.”

“She’s confused.”

“She also showed me the contracts you forced her to sign.”

Adrian tightened his grip on the folder. “You haven’t spoken to her in six years. You know nothing about our marriage.”

Pain crossed Evelyn’s face.

“My father tried to speak to me,” she said quietly. “You made sure I never knew.”

Adrian’s eyes sharpened.

Charles placed one protective hand behind Evelyn’s shoulder.

“I sent her letters every month,” he said. “Birthday cards, legal notices, invitations and copies of her trust reports. You intercepted all of them.”

“That’s absurd.”

Evelyn reached into her pocket and removed a small brass key.

Adrian recognized it instantly.

It belonged to the locked cabinet in his private office.

Inside that cabinet were the letters, the altered trust statements and every document he had hidden from her.

His confidence fractured.

“What did you take?” he demanded.

Evelyn’s voice remained calm.

“Enough to understand why you needed my signature tonight.”

Adrian stepped toward her.

Charles moved between them.

“Take one more step,” he said, “and you will explain that bruise to the officers waiting outside.”

Adrian looked toward the front door.

Only then did he notice the faint movement of shadows behind the frosted glass.
