Chapter 3 - THE COMPANY HE THOUGHT HE OWNED

Adrian looked toward the front door, then back at Evelyn.

“You brought police into my house?”

Charles’s expression remained cold. “It is not your house.”

Adrian laughed. “I have managed this estate for six years.”

“You managed it as Evelyn’s spouse. Ownership never transferred.”

“She signed the authorization.”

Charles nodded toward the folder under Adrian’s arm. “Then you won’t mind showing us the original.”

Adrian did not move.

The document he carried was supposed to solve the problem created by his earlier forgeries. He had planned to frighten Evelyn into signing a clean copy, then destroy the altered versions.

Instead, those versions were now in Charles’s possession.

Adrian changed tactics.

He softened his voice and looked directly at Evelyn.

“Your father is using you. He came back because he wants the shares your mother left you.”

Evelyn’s face tightened, but she did not lower her eyes.

Charles stepped away from her, deliberately giving her room to answer for herself.

“You told me he hated me,” Evelyn said.

“He did.”

“You blocked his number.”

“To stop him from manipulating you.”

“You kept every letter.”

“You were happier without him.”

“You forged my signature.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “I protected our future.”

“No. You financed yours.”

Evelyn removed a flash drive from her pocket.

Inside Adrian’s cabinet, she had found records of payments routed through twelve shell companies. He had diverted millions from Hawthorne Industries while serving as interim chief financial officer.

Several transfers went to a private account under his mother’s name.

Others paid for an apartment Evelyn had never seen.

Charles had already identified the woman living there: Adrian’s assistant, Vanessa Reed.

The affair had lasted four years.

“You didn’t marry me because you loved me,” Evelyn said. “You married access to my mother’s company.”

Adrian’s composure finally cracked.

“You think you can walk back into the boardroom after hiding in this house for six years? They believe you are unstable.”

“Because you falsified my records.”

“No one will believe that.”

A quiet electronic tone sounded from the staircase.

Charles looked toward a small security camera near the ceiling.

Adrian followed his gaze.

The entire conversation was being recorded.

“The officers outside already have copies of the forged medical reports,” Charles said. “They also have the transfers and the messages between you and the doctor you paid.”

Adrian stepped backward.

For years, he had controlled every version of the truth Evelyn heard. Now, for the first time, he could not control the witnesses.

He reached for the front door.

It opened before he touched it.

Two investigators entered, followed by Hawthorne Industries’ general counsel.

The attorney carried a sealed red folder.

“Adrian Cole,” she said, “the board met thirty minutes ago. You have been removed from every company position effective immediately.”

Adrian stared at Evelyn.

“You did this?”

May you like

She shook her head.

“You did.”
