Chapter 3 - The Race Against Death

The emergency operating theater at St. Jude’s Private Medical Center was a chaotic storm of blinding white lights, shouting nurses, and the frantic, rhythmic beeping of cardiac monitors.

Julian Vance stood just outside the reinforced glass doors of Suite 4, his knuckles stark white as he gripped the stainless-steel handrail. His tailored charcoal suit was ruined, stained with Sophia’s blood from the moment he had lifted her off the marble floor. His dark eyes were bloodshot, locked entirely on the surgical team moving frantically around the operating table inside.

Dr. Alan Thorne, the city’s leading obstetric surgeon and a close personal associate of Julian, stepped out of the scrub room, wiping his hands vigorously on a sterile towel. His face was grave, etched with deep lines of exhaustion and stress.

Julian was instantly in front of him, blocking his path. "Talk to me, Alan. How is she?"

"It’s acute placental abruption triggered by catastrophic, unmanaged eclampsia," Dr. Thorne said bluntly, not sugar-coating the brutal medical reality. "Her blood pressure reached stroke levels. If you had arrived ten minutes later, Julian... neither she nor the twins would have survived."

Julian felt a cold shiver pierce his spine, though his voice remained chillingly controlled. "Are they alive?"

"Barely," the doctor replied grimly. "We’re performing an emergency classical C-section right now. The babies are thirty-four weeks, but the oxygen deprivation caused by Sophia’s collapse has put severe stress on both infants. Twin A is stable, but Twin B’s heartbeat dropped critically during intubation. We’re fighting to save all three of them."

"Do whatever it takes," Julian commanded, his voice carrying the absolute, crushing authority of a billionaire who owned half the city's infrastructure. "Spare no expense. Bring in specialists from Boston and Zurich if you have to. If she dies, this hospital ceases to exist by morning."

"I know, Julian. We're doing everything humanly possible," Dr. Thorne nodded before turning sharply and rushing back through the swinging sterile doors.

Left alone in the sterile corridor, Julian sank heavily onto a plastic waiting room chair, resting his elbows on his knees and burying his face in his blood-stained hands.

For the first time in his life, Julian felt utterly powerless.

He thought back five years ago, before Marcus Vance had swept into Sophia’s life with flashy sports cars, fake philanthropic foundations, and smooth-talking corporate promises. Sophia had been an aspiring classical pianist then—vibrant, laughing, and full of light. Julian had loved her deeply, but he had believed his dark, cutthroat world of corporate warfare and syndicate enemies would only bring her danger. He had stepped back, letting her go, believing Marcus would give her a safe, conventional life.

Instead, Marcus had systematically imprisoned her in a gilded cage, emotionally starved her, and finally, when pregnancy complications made her an inconvenience to his social calendar, left her to die on a cold marble floor like garbage.

I will destroy him, Julian vowed silently, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth ached. Every asset, every stock share, every ounce of social standing Marcus owns will be torn down to ash.

Suddenly, the surgical doors flew open.

A pediatric nurse rushed out into the hallway, pushing a high-tech mobile incubator containing two tiny, wriggling bundles swaddled in sterile blue blankets.

Julian stood up slowly, his breath catching in his throat as he stepped forward to look through the clear plastic shield.

Two tiny faces. Red, wrinkled, fighting fiercely for every breath.

"Mr. Vance," the nurse announced with a breathless smile, though her eyes were filled with tears of relief. "You have a healthy baby boy and a healthy baby girl. They’re fighters. They made it."

Julian stared down at the twins, an unfamiliar, overwhelming wave of emotion crashing over his chest. He reached out, gently pressing his index finger against the clear plastic casing near the tiny hand of the baby girl.

"And their mother?" Julian asked, his voice cracking slightly.

"Dr. Thorne just stabilized her vitals," the nurse replied. "She’s waking up, Mr. Vance. She’s asking for her babies."

Julian closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, letting out a breath he felt like he had been holding for an eternity.

"Take them to the private VIP recovery suite," Julian instructed softly. "And post four armed guards outside the door. Nobody gets in unless I authorize it. Especially not Marcus Vance."
