Chapter 4 - The Predator Returns

Three days later, the morning sunlight filtered softly through the blinds of the luxury VIP recovery suite at St. Jude’s. The room looked more like a five-star hotel suite than a hospital room, filled with fresh white lilies, specialized medical monitors humming quietly in the corner, and two sleek bassinets resting beside the king-sized bed.

Sophia stirred slowly against the plush pillows. Her body ached as if she had been hit by a freight train, but the crushing, suffocating pain beneath her ribs was gone.

She blinked open her eyes, her gaze fixing on the ceiling before shifting toward the bassinets.

Two small, peaceful bundles rose and fell with gentle, rhythmic breaths.

"They're beautiful," a deep, familiar voice murmured from the shadows near the window.

Sophia gasped softly, turning her head.

Julian Vance stepped out from the sunlight, walking slowly toward the bed. He wore a crisp, dark suit, his tie neatly knotted, though the quiet gentleness in his dark eyes completely erased the terrifying corporate predator the rest of the world knew.

"Julian..." Sophia whispered, her throat dry and raspy. "How... how am I here? What happened?"

Julian gently pulled a chair close to the bedside, sitting down and taking her cold, pale hand in his warm, steady grip. "Marcus left you on the floor, Sophia. My security alerts flagged your medical telemetry. I broke into the penthouse and brought you here."

Tears instantly welled up in Sophia’s eyes, spilling over her lashes and tracking down her cheeks. The horrifying memory of Marcus stepping over her body, pouring a drink, and walking out the door rushed back with full, brutal force.

"He left me to die, Julian," she sobbed, her voice breaking. "I begged him... I told him I was dying, and he just... he just walked away."

Julian’s jaw tightened into a rigid line of suppressed fury, but his thumb brushed gently across the back of her hand, offering a steady anchor of absolute calm. "I know. I saw it on the penthouse security logs I downloaded after we left. He doesn't deserve to breathe the same air as you or those children."

"My babies..." Sophia whispered, turning her head toward the bassinets with desperate maternal love. "Are they...?"

"They're perfect," Julian smiled softly, a genuine warmth touching his features. "A boy and a girl. Strong, healthy, and stubborn—clearly inherited their mother's fighting spirit."

Before Sophia could answer, a sharp, angry commotion echoed from the hallway outside the heavy oak recovery suite doors.

"Move out of my way, you rented thugs! Do you have any idea who I am? That’s my wife and my children in there!"

Marcus Vance’s arrogant, frantic voice pierced through the soundproofed walls.

Sophia’s face drained of what little color she had left, her entire body stiffening in sheer panic. "It’s Marcus... Julian, please, don't let him in here. I never want to see his face again."

Julian squeezed her hand reassuringly, stood up from his chair, and buttoned his suit jacket with cold, methodical precision.

"He won't touch you, Sophia," Julian promised quietly.

As Julian walked over and pulled open the heavy suite door, Marcus Vance burst into the hallway, aggressively shoving one of Julian’s private security guards. Marcus stopped dead in his tracks the moment he saw Julian standing in the doorway.

Marcus’s expensive silk tie was slightly crooked, his hair disheveled, and his face twisted into an ugly mask of corporate panic and faux outrage.

"Julian?" Marcus sneered, trying to force his usual arrogant authority. "What the hell are you doing in my wife's hospital room? Get out of my way before I have my lawyers sue you into oblivion for trespassing and patient harassment!"

Julian didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply stepped out into the hallway, closing the door firmly behind him to keep Sophia from hearing the confrontation.

"Your wife?" Julian repeated, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp, lethal register. "The same wife you stepped over and left to die on the marble floor three nights ago?"

Marcus’s eyes flickered with a sudden, guilty panic, though he quickly tried to mask it with bluster. "That’s a private marital matter! Sophia is prone to dramatic episodes, and she’s legally my property—"

Smack.

Julian’s fist connected with Marcus’s jaw with the force of a freight train.

Marcus stumbled backward, crashing hard against the hallway wall, clutching his bleeding lip with a look of utter shock and terror.

"You listen to me very carefully, Marcus," Julian whispered, leaning in close until his face was inches away from the terrified executive. "Sophia filed for emergency legal separation and full custody two hours ago, backed by my entire legal team. Every corporate asset you own, every offshore account you hid, and every shell company you operated is currently being frozen by federal audit."

"You can't do that!" Marcus choked out, wiping blood from his mouth. "I'll ruin you! I'll—"

May you like

"You're done, Marcus," Julian interrupted coldly. "If you ever come within five miles of Sophia or those children again, I won't just ruin your company. I will personally bury you so deep in federal prison that you'll forget what the sun looks like. Now get the hell out of my hospital."

Marcus stared into Julian’s dead, unyielding eyes, realized he had completely lost everything, and turned on his heel, fleeing down the corridor in absolute disgrace.
