Chapter 2 - THE ACCIDENT THAT MADE HIM RICH
Catherine had called Eleanor three hours before the crash.
Her voice sounded strained, but she insisted everything was fine.
“I need to show you something tomorrow,” she said.
“What is it?”
“Something Marcus has been hiding.”
Eleanor heard a door open in the background.
Catherine immediately changed her tone.
“I’ll call you later, Mom.”
She never did.
At 11:17 that night, Catherine’s car left a mountain road and fell sixty feet into a ravine. Emergency workers found her alone behind the wheel.
Marcus arrived before Eleanor reached the hospital.
He wore the same dark coat he had worn to dinner earlier that evening. There was a scratch across his cheek and dried mud on one sleeve.
He explained that he had been searching for Catherine after she stormed out of the house.
The police accepted his account.
The medical examiner found alcohol in Catherine’s system. Marcus produced messages suggesting she had been depressed. A private physician confirmed she had suffered anxiety following several miscarriages.
Within days, the story became permanent.
Catherine Vale had driven while intoxicated during an emotional crisis.
Eleanor questioned the alcohol report. Catherine rarely drank and never drove afterward.
Marcus responded with compassion carefully designed for witnesses.
“Grief makes us reject painful truths,” he said.
He then assumed temporary control of Vale Meridian, the cybersecurity company Catherine inherited from her late father.
The transition appeared legal.
A trust document granted Marcus voting authority if Catherine died while their son, Lucas, was still a minor.
Lucas was eight.
Marcus controlled the company, the estate and nearly every financial asset meant for the child.
Eleanor received nothing except a warning from Marcus’s attorneys to stop interfering with her grandson’s recovery.
For seven years, she was permitted to see Lucas only under supervision.
Every visit revealed another piece of the truth.
Lucas said his mother had not been drinking that night.
He remembered Catherine arguing with Marcus in the garage.
He remembered his father taking her car keys, then returning them twenty minutes later.
When Eleanor asked Marcus about it, access to Lucas ended completely.
That was when she stopped confronting him openly.
Instead, she began investigating.
She hired a retired detective to reexamine the crash. The original vehicle had been destroyed, but archived photographs showed damage inconsistent with the official report.
A brake line had been cut.
The toxicology result also contained irregularities. The laboratory technician who processed Catherine’s blood had received a large payment from a security company controlled by Marcus.
But suspicion was not enough.
Eleanor needed proof that would survive Marcus’s lawyers.
The proof arrived on Lucas’s seventeenth birthday.
A package appeared outside Sterling House with no return address. Inside was an encrypted drive and a note in Catherine’s handwriting.
Mom, if you are reading this, Marcus found out I was leaving.
Eleanor nearly collapsed.
Catherine had prepared the package before her death and arranged for it to be released when Lucas approached adulthood. She feared Marcus would control the boy’s inheritance for as long as possible, but she believed Eleanor would still be alive to protect him when the trust transferred.
The drive contained financial records showing Marcus had diverted nearly ninety million dollars from Vale Meridian through shell companies.
It also contained audio from the smart-home system Catherine had secretly installed.
In one recording, Marcus threatened to have her declared mentally incompetent.
In another, he told a company attorney that Catherine would “never reach the board meeting.”
The final file was incomplete security footage from the night of the crash.
Marcus entered the family garage forty minutes before Catherine left. He raised her car and disappeared beneath it carrying a tool case.
The video ended before he emerged.
Someone had attempted to delete the recording.
Catherine’s system preserved only part of it.
Eleanor needed Marcus to explain the missing minutes himself.
So she allowed one of his informants to learn that the original trust agreement and complete garage recording were hidden inside Sterling House.
Three days later, Marcus arrived with a gun.
