Chapter 4 - THE SON HE HAD LIED TO
Lucas Vale waited in a car beyond the security gates.
At seventeen, he had Marcus’s dark hair and Catherine’s gray eyes. He had grown tall during the years Eleanor was forbidden to see him, but the frightened little boy she remembered still appeared whenever someone mentioned his mother.
Eleanor had not wanted him near Sterling House that night.
He insisted.
“I spent nine years hearing Dad say she chose to leave us,” Lucas told her. “I need to hear what he says when he thinks I’m not listening.”
The emergency call had been transmitted to a secure tablet inside the car.
Lucas heard everything.
He heard Marcus admit entering the garage.
He heard him explain that Catherine was supposed to miss the board meeting.
He heard the moment Marcus finally confessed that he knew her car had been sabotaged.
When officers led Marcus through the snow, Lucas stepped from the vehicle.
Marcus’s face changed at the sight of him.
“Lucas.”
The boy did not move.
“Your grandmother set me up.”
“You damaged Mom’s car.”
“I never wanted her dead.”
“But you let everyone believe she was drunk.”
“I was trying to keep the company intact for you.”
“You kept it for yourself.”
Marcus looked toward Eleanor.
“She has poisoned you against me.”
Lucas removed a phone from his pocket and played one of Catherine’s recordings.
Her voice crossed the snow-covered driveway.
If Lucas ever hears this, tell him that none of this is his fault. His father made his choices before our son was old enough to understand them.
Marcus’s face collapsed.
“Where did you get that?”
“Mom left it for me.”
“She was confused.”
“She sounded afraid.”
“She wanted to take you away from me.”
Lucas’s voice broke for the first time.
“She wanted to keep me safe.”
Marcus stepped toward him, but an officer pulled him back.
“I am still your father.”
Lucas wiped his eyes.
“That is the worst part.”
Marcus was placed inside a patrol car.
Federal investigators arrived before midnight. Catherine’s financial records connected him to years of embezzlement, bribery and falsified corporate reports. His recorded confession reopened the investigation into both Catherine’s death and Victor Dane’s overdose.
The original trust agreement created an even more immediate consequence.
Catherine’s father had included an automatic removal clause. Any trustee who concealed a beneficiary’s death, used coercion against the family or committed fraud involving Vale Meridian would lose all authority without requiring a board vote.
The clause became active the moment Marcus admitted sabotaging Catherine’s vehicle to influence the meeting.
His access to every company account was frozen.
His voting rights disappeared.
The mansion he occupied belonged to Lucas’s trust and was placed under independent management.
By morning, Marcus had lost the company, the house and the power he used to keep Lucas isolated.
But investigators discovered one final secret inside the encrypted drive.
Two weeks before Catherine died, she had transferred controlling shares of Vale Meridian to Lucas, with Eleanor appointed temporary guardian if Marcus was ever investigated for fraud.
