Chapter 3 - The Colonel Arrives

Sergeant Tyler Brennan moved instantly, smoothing down the front of his Marine utility uniform and slapping a desperate, oily smile onto his face as he hurried out to intercept the base commander.
"Colonel Mercer! Sir!" Brennan called out, practically tripping over his own boots in his rush to control the narrative. "Good morning, sir. We had a minor civilian security incident out here on the docks just a few minutes ago. Some trespasser wandered into a restricted operational zone. Don't worry, sir—I’ve already handled it completely."
Colonel James Mercer barely glanced in Brennan’s direction. He walked right past him as if the sergeant were nothing more than a stubborn pile of trash blowing across the pavement.
Instead, Mercer’s sharp, seasoned eyes locked directly onto me.
They dropped down to my soaked clothing, the thick military-use towel wrapped tightly around my shoulders, and the angry, bright red abrasion across my neck where my badge lanyard had violently ripped away when Brennan shoved me into the water.
Then, Mercer’s gaze shifted back to Brennan, and the temperature in the entire compound plummeted below freezing.
"What happened to her?" Mercer’s voice was dangerously low, vibrating with suppressed fury.
Brennan jumped in to answer before anyone else could open their mouth, desperate to seal his web of lies. "Noncompliant visitor, sir! She entered a restricted sector without clearance and aggressively resisted peaceful removal. Standard security protocol was applied."
Colonel Mercer’s expression hardened into granite. "Did she formally identify herself to you, Sergeant?"
Brennan gave a nervous, high-pitched laugh, trying to play it off for the command staff standing behind the colonel. "She gave me a last name, sir. Frankly, she seemed delusional. Apparently, she thinks walking around and dropping the name Adams is supposed to mean something special."
Nobody on the command staff laughed with him. Master Guns Granger kept his eyes fixed firmly on the ground, a grim, satisfied smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. NCIS agents stepped out of their vehicles, surrounding the perimeter.
I slowly stepped out from the covered walkway.
Colonel Mercer took two long, purposeful strides forward, closing the distance between us.
Brennan started babbling again, panicking under the heavy silence. "Sir, if she tries to file some frivolous administrative complaint about standard procedure, I have three loyal Marines right here who will corroborate every word of my report—"
Mercer stopped dead in his tracks, standing directly in front of me.
His eyes met mine, locking into a steady gaze of shared operational understanding.
Recognition flashed instantly across his face. The rigid lines of exhaustion and stress that had defined his posture all week melted away, replaced by absolute, uncompromising authority.
And then, right there in front of every bewildered Marine, investigator, and officer on the dock, Colonel Mercer’s posture snapped into a razor-sharp position of absolute military attention.

His heavy leather heels clicked sharply together.
And while Sergeant Tyler Brennan stood frozen behind him with his mouth hanging open in total disbelief, Colonel Mercer slowly raised his right hand, crisp and immaculate, toward the brim of his service cover in a flawless, formal salute.
