Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

The collective intake of breath from the surrounding Marines sounded like a sudden gust of wind sweeping across the concrete pier.
Brennan physically recoiled, blinking rapidly as his brain struggled to process what his eyes were witnessing. "Sir... Colonel? Who—who are you saluting? She’s just a trespasser! She’s a tourist!"
Colonel Mercer did not drop his salute. He held it for three full, agonizing seconds before lowering his hand with deliberate precision. He turned his head slightly toward Brennan, his eyes flashing with absolute contempt.
"Shut your mouth, Sergeant," Mercer commanded, his voice slicing through the morning air like a bayonet.
He turned back to me, his tone shifting to one of profound professional respect. "Special Agent Adams. Headquarters Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Major Fraud and Asset Recovery Division. I am profoundly sorry for the... unorthodox welcome you received upon arrival at this command."
Brennan’s knees suddenly buckled slightly. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse in a uniform. "Special... Special Agent? No. No, that’s impossible. She’s... she’s just an auditor!"
"Special Agent Adams has been operating under direct orders from the Department of the Navy Inspector General and my own office for the past fourteen months," Colonel Mercer roared, turning fully to face the trembling sergeant. "She wasn't trespassing, Brennan. She was conducting a legally authorized, high-priority sting operation to expose the exact supply-chain leak you and your little smuggling ring have been exploiting!"
The two NCIS special agents who had stepped out of the Tahoe moved in with swift, practiced efficiency. They flanked Brennan before he could even attempt to reach for his sidearm.
"Sergeant Tyler Brennan," the lead NCIS investigator announced loudly, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for grand larceny of military property, conspiracy, wire fraud, falsification of official federal logs, and assault on a federal law enforcement officer. You have the right to remain silent..."
The metallic click of the handcuffs locking securely around Brennan’s wrists echoed sharply against the metal siding of Warehouse Three.
"Wait! You can't do this! This is a setup!" Brennan screamed, thrashing wildly as the agents spun him around and pushed him against the hood of the vehicle. "It was just supposed to be a little extra cash! It was victimless!"
"Tell that to the court-martial board, Sergeant," Master Guns Granger said coldly, stepping forward to hand my wet visitor badge back to me with a crisp nod of respect.

As Brennan was shoved unceremoniously into the back of the NCIS vehicle, the white contractor van we had spotted near Warehouse Three tried to suddenly throw itself into reverse and bolt for the south gate.
It didn't get twenty feet. Two federal interceptor cruisers blocked the exit instantly, dragging the corrupt civilian drivers out onto the gravel in a flurry of tactical gear and shouting commands. The entire fourteen-month conspiracy was collapsing in real-time, right on schedule.
