Chapter 3 - The Corporate Empire Strikes Back

The interrogation room at the downtown precinct smelled faintly of stale coffee and industrial disinfectant, but to me, it felt like the safest place on earth. Sophie was safely tucked into her car seat beside my chair, sleeping through the chaos as a female officer kept a gentle, watchful eye on her.
Across the metal table sat Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor. He placed a thick stack of certified documents and printed text message logs down between us.
“Mrs. Brooks, I’ve been reading through the communications recovered from your husband’s cloud backup and corporate server,” Detective Miller said, his tone softened with genuine sympathy. “This wasn't an impulsive affair. Your husband and Ms. Hayes have been orchestrating this legal setup for nearly eight months—ever since you announced your pregnancy.”
I stared blankly at the transcripts spread across the stainless-steel table. There were messages between Eric and Lauren discussing how to isolate me from my family, how to manipulate my medical POA during childbirth, and how to quietly strip my name off our joint assets while I was incapacitated in the delivery ward.
“He thought I was weak,” I murmured, my voice steady, stripped of all tears. “He thought because I trusted him, I wouldn't see it coming.”
“Well, his arrogance is going to cost him everything,” Detective Miller replied, sliding a final document across the table. “Not only is he facing felony charges for identity fraud, forgery, and attempted unlawful removal of a minor, but the state prosecutor is upgrading the charges to conspiracy due to Ms. Hayes’ involvement.”
“What about Lauren?” I asked.
“Her medical license is permanently revoked now, and she’s facing federal charges for impersonating active medical personnel inside a municipal hospital,” the detective said with a grim smile. “She’s currently in holding down the hall, crying about her career. Eric is refusing to speak to anyone until his high-priced defense attorney arrives.”
I let out a slow, steady breath, feeling the heavy iron weight that had crushed my chest for days finally begin to lift.
“Can I make a phone call before his attorney gets here?” I asked quietly.
Detective Miller slid my phone across the table. “Go right ahead, Mrs. Brooks.”
I didn't call my mother. I didn't call a family member.
I dialed the direct extension of Arthur Sterling—the legendary, ruthless founder of Sterling Capital and the primary venture capitalist behind the multi-million-dollar tech firm where Eric served as senior vice president.
The phone rang twice before a gravelly, commanding voice answered. “Sterling speaking.”
“Arthur, it’s Natalie Brooks.”
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, followed by a noticeable softening in the old man's tone. “Natalie, my dear. I expected you to be resting at home with your new baby. Are you calling about the baby gift our board sent yesterday?”
“No, Arthur,” I said, my voice cutting through the secure line like a diamond cutter. “I’m calling from the downtown police precinct. My husband, Eric Brooks, was just arrested for attempting to commit child abduction and financial fraud against me using forged corporate assets.”
A dead silence fell over the phone line. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
When Arthur spoke again, every trace of grandfatherly warmth had vanished, replaced by the terrifying, cold fury of a billionaire titan whose trusted empire had been violated.
“Repeat that to me, Natalie.”
I calmly laid out the facts: the forged custody papers, the fake medical guardianship, the embezzlement of corporate funds to finance Lauren Hayes’ lifestyle behind my back, and the attempt to steal my newborn child straight out of the recovery ward.
When I finished, Arthur let out a slow, gravelly breath that sounded like a gathering storm.
“Eric used company legal resources and corporate escrow accounts to fund this fraudulent custody scheme?” Arthur asked, his voice shaking with restrained rage.
“Every single dollar of it,” I confirmed. “And he used his executive position to manipulate our joint holdings while I was in surgery.”
“Listen to me very carefully, Natalie,” Arthur commanded, every word crisp and absolute. “You do not lift a finger. You take your baby, you go home, and you let me handle my executive staff. By the time the stock market opens tomorrow morning, Eric Brooks will no longer exist at Sterling Capital. Every stock option he owns is forfeit, every asset frozen, and his name will be scrubbed from every registry we own. He wanted to play a ruthless game? We’ll see how he survives in the gutter.”

“Thank you, Arthur,” I said softly.
“Thank you for having the courage to protect my great-granddaughter,” the old man replied. “Now go home, Natalie. Your real work is about to begin.”
