Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Brooks

Two weeks after the incident at the hospital, the storm officially made landfall.

The front page of the financial daily newspaper featured a massive, humiliating headline: TECH EXEC ERIC BROOKS FIRED AND ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AND CUSTODY SCANDAL.

I sat in my sunlit living room, holding a sleeping Sophie in my arms, watching the legal news report unfold on the television screen. Footage played of Eric—disheveled, pale, and handcuffed—being led out of the county courthouse after a judge formally denied his bail request due to flight risk and severity of charges. His expensive custom suit looked wrinkled, and his arrogant expression had been permanently replaced by a look of sheer, panicked shock.

Beside him, Lauren Hayes was facing her own swift destruction. Without Eric’s money and protection, her legal defense was collapsing, and federal prosecutors were pushing for maximum prison time for healthcare fraud and kidnapping conspiracy.

The doorbell rang, sharp and clear.

I carefully shifted Sophie into her bassinet and walked to the front door, opening it to find my attorney standing on the porch holding a thick leather briefcase.

“Good morning, Natalie,” he said with a respectful nod, stepping inside. “I take it you saw the morning news?”

“I did,” I replied, gesturing toward the living room sofa. “Is the final settlement ready?”

“It is better than we anticipated,” my attorney said, sitting down and flipping open the briefcase. “Because Arthur Sterling personally intervened on behalf of the board, Sterling Capital has executed an emergency forfeiture of Eric’s executive partnership shares. Furthermore, your husband’s defense counsel has realized they have zero defense against the forgery charges.”

He slid a comprehensive legal agreement across the coffee table.

“What does this mean for me?” I asked, scanning the document.

“It means full, unchallengeable, sole legal and physical custody of Sophie,” my attorney stated clearly. “It means the complete dissolution of your marriage under gross fault grounds of fraud, abandonment, and conspiracy. And it means every single asset Eric tried to hide in offshore accounts—funded by embezzled company bonuses meant for your family—has been legally reassigned directly to you and your daughter as restitution.”

I looked down at the signature line bearing my name.

Six months ago, I was just a quiet, devoted wife trusting a man who looked down on me, believing I was entirely dependent on his goodwill and corporate standing.

Today, I owned our family home outright, held sole control of our financial future, and possessed absolute protection for my child.

I picked up the heavy gold-plated pen from the table, signed my name with steady, unflinching strokes, and handed it back to my lawyer.

“It’s over,” my attorney said softly, packing the papers away.

“No,” I corrected him, looking out the front window where the autumn sun was finally breaking through the heavy clouds. “It’s just beginning.”
