Chapter 5 - The Queen of the Underworld

Three months later, the autumn sunlight streamed through the grand glass windows of the Constantino estate, filling the sprawling library with a warm, golden glow.

The war was over. The Moretti syndicate had been completely dismantled, its remnants scattered to the winds, and the city’s criminal underworld had reached a unanimous, unspoken consensus: Salvatore Constantino was more powerful, more untouchable, and more dangerous than he had ever been in his entire life.

And standing beside him, sharing his empire, was a twenty-six-year-old former waitress who had taught the oldest wolf in the city how to love again.

I stood by the grand French doors, looking out over the manicured gardens where my mother—now fully cancer-free and recovering in the sunshine—was walking with a private nurse.

Footsteps echoed softly across the hardwood floor behind me. Strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest.

"You're working too late again," Salvatore murmured into my hair, resting his chin on my shoulder.

"I'm just reviewing the new funding proposals for the city's pediatric cancer research foundation," I replied, turning around in his embrace and wrapping my arms around his neck. "The charity we set up in your wife's name... it's already fully funded for the next ten years."

Salvatore smiled, a rare, genuine smile that reached his gray eyes and softened every hard line on his face.

"Elena would have loved you," he whispered, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead. "In fact, I think she’s the one who sent you to Giovanni's that night."

I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat. "Everyone told me you were too old for romance, Salvatore. They said you were cold, ruthless, and married only to your empire."

"Let them talk," he replied, his grip tightening around me with fierce, protective devotion. "They only saw the monster the world forced me to become. You saw the man waiting underneath."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet box, opening it to reveal a magnificent ring set with a flawless, rare pink diamond that sparkled in the afternoon light.

"I didn't buy you with debt, Lily," Salvatore said, looking deep into my eyes with a vulnerability he showed to no one else in the world. "And I didn't save you for an exchange. I chose you because for the first time in twenty-three years, the dark world I built finally felt like a home."

I smiled, tears of absolute joy filling my eyes as I slipped my hand into his scarred, powerful palm.

May you like

"Yes," I whispered. "A thousand times, yes."

Down below on the estate grounds, the city lights began to twinkle against the evening sky, but inside the walls of our fortress, there was no fear, no debt, and no darkness left—only a future built by a love that proved everyone wrong.
