Chapter 2 - The Upload to the Giant Screen

The master audiovisual control panel for the Halcyon Hotel ballroom was a state-of-the-art digital matrix system, and Ardan knew its operating architecture better than the hotel's own technicians. For the past three weeks, she had personally synchronized the evening’s presentation deck, syncing her tablet directly to the central switcher so she could seamlessly toggle between historical archival footage and live event feeds without interrupting the program.
She slipped her phone out again, tapped the share icon, and wirelessly beamed the three incoming image files directly from her personal cloud storage folder into the master projector’s active media queue, labeling the file slot with a single, unmissable designation: “Special Corporate Update - Slide 42.”
On stage, the master of ceremonies tapped his microphone, sending a sharp, high-frequency pop echoing through the towering speakers.
"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed partners, and members of the Bellamy family," the MC boomed warmly, his voice dripping with practiced corporate charisma. "If I could direct your attention to the main grand stage, as we invite our visionary patriarch, Mr. Douglas Bellamy, alongside his son and executive vice president, Travis Bellamy, to the podium for the midnight toast!"
Polite, thunderous applause erupted across the four hundred seated guests. Silverware clinked against crystal. Lenora Bellamy beamed with absolute matriarchal pride, her diamond choker sparkling brilliantly under the spotlight. Travis straightened his jacket with practiced swagger, flashing his signature million-dollar smile—the exact smile that had tricked investors, donors, and Ardan herself for five long years—and began walking toward the central stage steps.
Ardan stood near the base of the AV control station, her posture upright, her silk emerald gown draped like liquid jade against her frame. She looked like the picture of aristocratic composure.
The MC raised his hand for quiet. "Before Douglas speaks, we have a special digital retrospective prepared by our chief operations coordinator, Mrs. Ardan Bellamy, highlighting the future leadership of Bellamy House."
The crowd murmured in low, appreciative approval. Heads turned toward Ardan, offering warm, deferential smiles. Douglas Bellamy himself nodded approvingly from the edge of the stage, his stern, weathered face softening with rare paternal pride.
"Let's roll the final slide, AV team," the MC announced cheerfully, gesturing toward the massive thirty-foot screen looming behind the podium.
Ardan didn't wait for the technician. Her thumb rested calmly on the master override button of her smartphone interface.
Now, she thought.
She pressed Execute.
Instantly, the looping historical montage of Bellamy House corporate headquarters snapped away. In its place, filling the colossal thirty-foot high-definition LED display with terrifying, cinematic clarity, was Slide 42.
The entire ballroom plunged into a dead, suffocating silence.
It wasn't a gradual quiet. It was the sudden, violent vacuum of sound that occurs right before a tornado touches down. Four hundred pairs of eyes locked onto the screen.
Towering over the crowd in crystal-clear four-kilohertz resolution was the image of Travis Bellamy, snoring heavily in his unmade bed, his arm flung across the mattress. Right beside his head, glowing under the bedroom light, was the pale hand with the sharp, blood-red almond manicure. And framing the background, crisp and unmistakable, was the silver wedding portrait of Ardan and Travis, inscribed with their wedding date.
For three agonizing seconds, nobody breathed.
Then, slide two transitioned automatically with a soft digital click.
The selfie of the blonde mistress in Ardan’s silk robe flashed across the screen, her arm draped intimately over Travis’s bare chest, smiling into the lens with smug, triumphant malice.
A collective, sharp intake of breath hissed through the four hundred guests like escaping steam.
At table twelve, a prominent city councilwoman dropped her crystal wineglass, shattering it against the marble floor with a sound like a pistol shot.

On the stage, Travis Bellamy had just reached the top step. He paused, turning around to smile at the audience as he awaited his applause. When he noticed the peculiar, stunned silence of the room, he frowned, turning his head slowly toward the massive screen behind him.
The color drained entirely from Travis’s face. His jaw slackened, his eyes bulging in absolute, catatonic horror as he stared up at his own naked, exposed betrayal broadcasting live to the most powerful people in Colorado.
