Chapter 1 - The Midnight Lockout and the $40,000 Insult

The relentless Atlanta rain hammered down against the pavement, soaking through my trench coat as I stood in front of the Buckhead mansion I had called home for seven agonizing years. My key refused to turn in the lock, the mechanism jammed by a brand-new deadbolt. When the front door finally clicked open, it wasn't my husband, Christian, who greeted me, but his mother, Beatrice, draped in a silk robe I had personally bought her for Christmas.
Her smile was sharp, dripping with venomous triumph. “My son has another woman now. She’s pregnant. So grab your suitcase and get out of our house.”
My stomach plummeted. For seven years, I had tolerated Beatrice’s endless barbs about my fertility, her belittling comments, and her insistence that a wife who couldn't bear children was a burden. Then Christian appeared behind her, his hair damp, wearing a smug expression I had never seen during our early years of struggling together.
“Valerie, don’t make a scene,” Christian said coldly. “Paige is three months pregnant. Her father owns a massive freight enterprise in Nashville, and he’s partnering with us for our next corporate expansion. I need a real family, not a dead end.”
He thrust a thick white envelope toward me. “There’s forty thousand dollars in here. Take it as a severance package and find an apartment.”
Forty thousand dollars. After seven years of marriage, wiping out my personal savings to bail him out of credit card debt when we first met, and working behind the scenes to build his career. Paige stepped forward, resting a hand dramatically over her flat stomach. “Don’t take it personally. Christian simply chose to upgrade.”
Beatrice chuckled. “And a woman of his social tier. Not some ordinary office drone living off my son.”
That was when a cold, calculated calm washed over me. They genuinely believed Christian was the master of this estate. They thought I was a penniless employee dependent on his generosity. They had no idea that the Buckhead mansion, the luxury car parked in the driveway, and Christian’s entire executive position existed solely because I was the president and majority shareholder of Summit Crest Group—a multi-billion-dollar corporate empire I had deliberately kept hidden from him to test his true character.
I didn't yell. I didn't beg. I took the envelope, turned on my heel, and walked away into the storm. At the corner, a sleek black sedan pulled up. My executive assistant, Spencer, stepped out with an umbrella.
“Madam President? What on earth happened?” Spencer asked, his eyes widening at my wet suitcase.
I slid into the leather backseat, looking back at the glowing windows of my house. “Christian just moved his pregnant mistress into a Summit Crest property and locked me out.”
Spencer went pale. “Shall I deploy corporate security?”
May you like
“No,” I replied, my voice freezing the air in the car. “Tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM sharp, I want the legal team at the front gate with the original master deed. Freeze all of his corporate accounts, revoke his secondary credit cards, repossess the company SUV, and terminate his executive contract immediately.”
As the car pulled away into the rainy night, I watched Beatrice draw the curtains shut, completely unaware that her son’s golden parachute had just been shredded.
