Chapter 4 - The Tapes That Changed Everything

Andrew didn't say another word. He turned on his heel, bolted out of the therapy room, and sprinted down the hallway toward his subterranean control bunker.

His heart pounded against his ribs like a sledgehammer. The air in the underground study suddenly felt thin, suffocating. He threw himself into his leather chair, his fingers flying across the keyboard to access the local server storage.

Camera 12 — West Wing Therapy Room.

Timestamp: 14:14 PM.

Date: Today.

Andrew’s hand trembled slightly as he clicked the play button. He adjusted the playback speed to normal, zooming in on the exact minute Angela had described.

On the screen, the high-definition video showed Angela supporting Phillip’s body weight on the physical therapy mat. She was holding his shins, gently assisting the movement.

Then, at timestamp 14:16, Angela stopped moving her hands. She stepped back half a step, letting go of his right ankle entirely, wiping the sweat from her brow with her sleeve.

Andrew leaned so close to the monitor his nose nearly touched the glass.

On screen, Phillip’s right leg—unsupported, untouched by Angela’s hands—shivered. A visible muscle contraction rippled down his quad. And then, with an agonizing, slow-motion jerk, Phillip’s foot lifted six inches off the mat, pushed forward, and set itself down flat against the floor.

It wasn't a spasm. It was a voluntary, neurological command sent from brain to muscle.

Andrew sat frozen, the blood rushing in his ears. He stared at the screen for a full minute after the video looped, the reality of what he was witnessing crashing over him with the force of a tidal wave.

For three years, he had believed the experts. He had accepted the dark, permanent verdict that his sons were trapped in unyielding prisons of flesh and bone. He had poured millions into a medical establishment that treated his boys as hopeless cases, managing their decline rather than fighting for their recovery.

And yet, this quiet, unassuming woman—hired off a standard agency resume—had achieved what ten million dollars of elite medical science couldn't.

Not because of revolutionary equipment or experimental drugs.

Because she believed in them when everyone else had written them off as ghosts.

Slowly, Andrew stood up from his desk. He walked out of the bunker, climbed the stairs, and made his way back to the west wing.

When he pushed open the door to the therapy room, Angela was still there, sitting on the edge of the mat, quietly wiping down Phillip’s forehead with a cool damp towel. The other two boys, Eric and Adam, were watching her with expressions of deep, unwavering focus.

Andrew stopped in the doorway. He cleared his throat.

Angela looked up, her guard instantly going back up, her shoulders tensing as she prepared for a renewed tirade from her formidable employer.

Instead, Andrew walked slowly across the room. He stopped three feet away from her, his massive frame uncurling from its defensive posture. For the first time since the night his wife died, the hard, impenetrable armor of Chicago’s most feared mafia boss cracked right down the middle.

Andrew looked down at Phillip. Then he looked up at Angela.

“I checked the tapes,” Andrew said, his voice uncharacteristically rough, thick with an emotion he hadn't felt in a decade.

Angela swallowed hard. “And?”

Andrew reached out, his calloused, powerful hand trembling slightly as he placed it gently on Angela’s shoulder.

“You’re fired from following Dr. Harrison’s protocol,” Andrew said softly, a faint, haunted smile breaking across his weary face. “Starting tomorrow, you write the rules. Whatever you need—whatever equipment, whatever specialists, whatever resources—you name it, and I’ll have it here in an hour.”

Angela blinked, genuine surprise flickering across her features. A slow, radiant smile bloomed across her face.

“Thank you, Mr. Grant,” she whispered.

Andrew turned his gaze back to his three sons, feeling a warm, unfamiliar spark of genuine warmth ignite in his chest. The iron fortress was finally opening its gates.
