Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit

By her third month in the Lake Forest estate, Fiona had completely remapped the household dynamics through a combination of calculated fear and unmatched intelligence. The staff no longer whispered behind her back; they moved out of her way like shadows whenever she walked down the corridors.
More importantly, she had quietly breached the estate’s secure perimeter systems.
Using a micro-router she smuggled in during her first week, Fiona had successfully cloned the master digital servers located in Seth’s private basement office. Night after night, while the rest of the estate slept, she sat at her vanity table decoding encrypted financial ledgers, shipping manifests, and internal communication logs.
What she uncovered was far worse than a simple criminal enterprise.
Seth Basil wasn't just running Chicago’s drug and weapons routes—he was being systematically hollowed out from the inside.
The missing millions that her father had supposedly "owed" the Basil family? They hadn't been lost in bad maritime investments at all. They had been deliberately embezzled over a three-year period by Angelo Ross and Victor Dane, who had then framed Thomas Callahan to cover their tracks and seize control of the syndicate's board.
Furthermore, Fiona discovered encrypted digital messages proving that Angelo Ross was actively planning a synchronized coup against Seth during the upcoming annual syndicate gala at the Drake Hotel—an ambush designed to eliminate Seth, blame a rival crew, and hand absolute control of the Chicago underworld over to Angelo.
Fiona stared at the glowing laptop screen in the dark bedroom, her jaw clenched tightly.
Seth was arrogant, cold, and dismissive. He treated her like garbage. But he was also her target—and more importantly, he was her legally bound husband. In the underworld code she had been raised in, a contract was absolute.
She wouldn't let Angelo kill him. Not because she loved Seth, but because killing Seth without her father's blessing would ruin her endgame.
Suddenly, the heavy oak bedroom door clicked open.
Fiona didn't panic. She didn't jump. With smooth, practiced grace, she closed the laptop lid, turned around in her vanity chair, and faced the doorway.
Seth stood in the threshold, looking exhausted. He had shed his suit jacket, his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. He had returned to the estate unexpectedly at two in the morning.
He froze when he saw her sitting there fully awake, calm and composed.
"What are you doing up at this hour?" Seth asked, his voice raspy and suspicious as he stepped further into the room. His eyes darted toward the closed laptop on the vanity. "What is that?"
"Just catching up on some light reading, husband," Fiona replied smoothly, her voice laced with quiet sarcasm.
Seth frowned, closing the distance between them with dangerous, predatory grace. He towered over her chair, his gray eyes narrowing into slits. "People in my world don't sit around reading at two in the morning unless they're planning something. Who are you, Fiona? Really?"
Instead of shrinking away in fear like any normal arranged bride, Fiona let out a low, chilling laugh. She stood up slowly, stepping directly into his personal space, forcing the towering mafia boss to look straight down into her unblinking eyes.
"You bought me on a debt ledger, Seth," she whispered, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper that sent a sudden shiver down his spine. "You thought you were getting a fat, helpless liability to hide away in your western wing. You thought my father was just a weak debtor."
Seth’s hand twitched instinctively toward the concealed holster beneath his arm. "Watch your tone."
"Or what?" Fiona challenged, stepping even closer, her chest brushing against his shirt. "You'll shoot me? Go ahead. But before your finger even reaches the trigger, you should probably know that your trusted head of security, Angelo Ross, has a sniper rifle zeroed in on your private office downtown right now—and he's planning to use it on you during Friday's gala."
Seth went completely rigid. The color drained from his face, replaced by a sudden, terrifying flash of pure rage. "How could you possibly know about Angelo?"
May you like
"Because unlike you, Seth, I actually pay attention to the people in the room," Fiona said, her gaze unwavering. "You've been so busy trying to look like a ruthless king that you didn't notice your own throne has been rotting from the inside out for three years."
For a long, agonizing moment, the silence in the bedroom was so heavy you could hear the ticking of a grandfather clock down the hall. Seth stared at her, not seeing a heavy-set, submissive bride anymore. For the very first time, he saw the ice-cold killer standing right in front of him.
