Chapter 5 - The Bloodbath at the Drake

The annual Chicago underworld syndicate gala at the Drake Hotel was glittering, opulent, and suffocatingly tense. Hundreds of high-ranking mobsters, corrupt politicians, and black-market kingpins milled around the grand ballroom, sipping champagne under glittering chandeliers.
Seth Basil stood near the back of the elevated VIP balcony, dressed in a flawless black tuxedo. He looked calm, collected, and dangerously detached. But beneath his tailored suit, his body was coiled like a spring.
Standing just three feet away, Angelo Ross smiled warmly, raising his crystal champagne flute. "A magnificent turnout tonight, boss. The empire has never looked stronger."
Seth turned his head slowly, looking at Angelo with eyes as cold as arctic ice. "Stronger than ever, Angelo. Almost unbreakable."
Angelo’s smile flickered for a microsecond before he recovered. "Indeed."
Across the crowded ballroom floor, dressed in a breathtaking, custom-tailored midnight-blue evening gown that hugged her voluptuous curves with effortless elegance, Fiona Callahan moved through the crowd like a gliding shark. Nobody laughed at her tonight. The whispered mockery from her wedding day was completely gone, replaced by wary, respectful silence as she walked past.
At exactly midnight, the ballroom lights suddenly flickered and died, plunging the opulent room into pitch blackness.
Before anyone could scream, the unmistakable sound of silenced automatic gunfire erupted from the side balconies. Armed mercenaries dressed in black tactical gear breached the ballroom windows, guns raised, firing toward the VIP stage.
Panic exploded instantly. Screams echoed off the marble pillars as guests dove beneath tables.
"It's an ambush!" Victor Dane yelled, drawing his sidearm. But instead of protecting Seth, Victor immediately pivoted and aimed his pistol straight toward Seth’s chest.
"Sorry, boss," Victor sneered in the dim emergency lighting. "Angelo sends his regards."
Victor pulled the trigger—but the gun clicked harmlessly on an empty chamber.
Victor blinked in shock, staring at his weapon. "What the—"
"Looking for your firing pin, Victor?" a cool, melodic voice echoed from the shadows behind him.
Victor spun around wildly—and took a heavy, reinforced steel tactical baton straight across his jaw with bone-shattering force. He collapsed instantly onto the Persian rug, unconscious before he even hit the floor.
Stepping out from the velvet drapes was Fiona. Her evening gown had been modified at the seams, a concealed leather thigh holster strapped securely to her leg, holding a custom-loaded Sig Sauer P320.
Up on the VIP balcony, Angelo Ross had already drawn his weapon and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against Seth’s temple.
"End of the line, Seth," Angelo hissed triumphantly, his eyes gleaming with mad ambition. "You were too arrogant to see it coming!"
"You're right, Angelo," a sharp voice cut through the gunfire from the top of the marble staircase. "He really is terrible at vetting his inner circle."
Angelo whipped his head around—and froze in absolute terror.
Fiona stood at the top of the grand staircase, holding two smoking firearms with the terrifying, effortless posture of a seasoned military operator. Beside her stood three dozen heavily armed tactical operatives wearing unmarked black tactical gear—her father's elite private security force, smuggled into the hotel hours earlier.
"Who... who the hell are you?" Angelo stammered, his hand trembling as he held the gun to Seth's head.
"I'm the debt collector," Fiona replied coldly.
Before Angelo could pull the trigger, Fiona raised her pistol and fired a single, flawless shot. The bullet struck Angelo’s gun hand dead-center, shattering his wrist and sending his pistol clattering loudly across the marble floor.
Seth didn't waste a second. With lightning-fast reflexes, he grabbed Angelo by the collar, spun him around, and drove his fist straight into Angelo’s jaw, knocking the traitor unconscious with one brutal blow.
The remaining mercenaries in the ballroom, seeing their leaders neutralized and surrounded by Fiona’s elite operatives, immediately dropped their weapons and raised their hands in surrender.
Within three minutes, the ballroom was completely secure.
The heavy crystal chandeliers hummed back to life, casting a warm, golden glow over the wreckage. The surviving guests huddled in terror beneath the tables, too terrified to even breathe.
Seth stood alone on the balcony, breathing heavily, his tuxedo jacket slightly rumpled. He looked down at Angelo’s unconscious body, then slowly turned his head to look across the room at Fiona.
She stood at the bottom of the grand staircase, her midnight-blue gown catching the light, holding a smoking weapon with absolute, terrifying grace.
Seth walked slowly down the marble steps, stopping just inches away from her. The cold, arrogant mafia boss who had treated her like a discarded pawn on their wedding day was completely gone. In his place stood a man looking at a lethal deity.
"You didn't just save my life," Seth said, his voice unusually quiet, stripped of all pretense. "You saved the entire syndicate."
Fiona lowered her weapon slowly, letting a sharp, knowing smile touch her lips. "I told you on our wedding day, Seth... I remember every single person who thought I was just a heavy-set girl who didn't belong in this room."
Seth looked down at her, a strange, genuine warmth breaking through his icy exterior for the very first time. He reached out, gently taking her gloved hand in his.

"The debt is paid in full, Fiona," Seth murmured softly, his eyes locked onto hers with absolute respect and terrifying devotion. "From this moment on... we rule this city together."
Fiona smiled back, knowing that the mafia boss had finally learned the most important rule of the underworld: never, ever underestimate a bride who knows how to handle a weapon.
