Chapter 2 - The Groom’s Rebellion

The ballroom fell into a suffocating, absolute stillness. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning vents and the distant, muffled honk of Manhattan traffic through the double-paned windows.

My mother’s face instantly drained of all color. The smug, triumphant sneer froze on her lips, morphing into a look of sheer, unadulterated panic. She spun around, her eyes darting toward the head table with wide, frantic disbelief.

“Adrian, darling,” my mother stammered, taking a hurried step forward, her voice pitching up in a desperate, nervous laugh. “What on earth are you doing? The champagne is making you confused! Sit down, let’s keep the evening moving—the best is yet to come!”

Adrian did not look at her. His hand tightened around the microphone handle until his knuckles turned stark white.

At the bride’s table, Vanessa shot up out of her velvet chair, her silk gown rustling violently. Her face was contorted in absolute horror, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “Adrian! Stop it! What are you playing at? Turn the mic off! Somebody cut the sound!” she shrieked, her voice cracking as several bridesmaids rushed forward to grab her arms, trying to pull her back down.

Adrian ignored them completely. His gaze remained fixed on me, standing alone by the back pillar.

“For the past six weeks,” Adrian began, his voice ringing out with terrifying clarity, cutting through the whispering murmurs of the stunned crowd, “my lovely bride and her parents have paraded around New York telling everyone how they pulled off the wedding of the century. They talked about their elite connections, their financial power, and how effortlessly they secured the finest venue, the best catering, and the most exclusive live entertainment in the city.”

A murmur rippled through the front rows. Several prominent businessmen leaned forward, exchanging confused glances.

“It was all a lie,” Adrian stated flatly.

He reached into the inner pocket of his tuxedo jacket, pulled out a thick stack of manila folders and printed financial documents, and slammed them down onto the pristine white tablecloth next to the wedding cake.

“Two months ago, the Sterling family accounts were completely drained due to Elena and Richard’s disastrous real estate speculations,” Adrian continued, pointing a finger directly at my trembling parents. “By the time I found out, the deposits had bounced. The vendors had canceled. The venue had locked their doors. This entire multi-million-dollar event was less than forty-eight hours away from being publicly canceled in utter humiliation.”

My mother let out a soft, strangled gasp, clutching her pearls as if she were about to faint.

“My parents-in-law were ready to call it quits and blame the caterers,” Adrian’s voice rose, hardening with bitter contempt. “They were willing to throw away our reputation, lie to your faces, and pretend everything was fine. But someone stepped in from the shadows. Someone who didn't ask for praise, didn't ask for a seat at the front table, and certainly didn't deserve to be publicly degraded by the very people whose lives she saved.”

My breath caught in my throat. Every eye in the ballroom slowly turned away from the head table and locked onto me.

Adrian raised a single piece of paper high in the air, catching the chandelier light.

“Forty-two thousand, five hundred dollars,” Adrian announced, reading the wire transfer receipt out loud. “Wired directly from Reyes Event Logistics—owned and operated by Clara Reyes. Every single floral arrangement, every drop of champagne, the live quartet, the transport fleet, and the venue extension were entirely funded by the woman Mrs. Elena Sterling just had the audacity to call a ‘used product.’”

The silence in the room shattered instantly.

An explosion of gasps, whispers, and outright shock erupted across the tables. Heads snapped back and forth between my mother—who looked like she had just seen a ghost—and me, standing frozen by the pillar.

Vanessa burst into hysterical tears, burying her face in her hands as her dream wedding dissolved into a public catastrophe.

And Adrian wasn't finished yet.
