Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of Lies

“Adrian, I swear to God, if you don't put that microphone down right now, I will annul this marriage before the cake is even cut!” Vanessa screamed, her pristine bridal composure completely shattering as she shoved past her bridesmaids and lunged toward her new husband.
Adrian didn't flinch. He simply stepped back, holding the microphone out of her reach, his eyes flashing with icy contempt.
“Annulling the marriage, Vanessa? With what money?” Adrian asked coldly, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. “Your father’s bank accounts are frozen by federal investigators for corporate fraud. The apartment we’re supposed to move into tomorrow? It’s currently in foreclosure because your family spent our wedding fund paying off loan sharks. The only reason we were even standing at that altar today was because Clara’s money kept the lights on.”
The collective gasp that echoed through the ballroom was deafening.
Prominent socialites who had spent the evening kissing my parents' cheeks suddenly leaned away from our family table as if a plague had broken out. Whispers of fraud, scandal, and bankruptcy darted from table to table like wildfire.
My father, Richard Sterling, who had spent the entire evening drinking expensive scotch and boasting about his business ventures, slowly slumped back into his chair, his face turning an alarming shade of gray. He covered his face with his trembling hands, completely broken.
My mother, realizing that her entire web of lies had been blown to smithereens in front of New York’s high society, spun around to face me. All the false dignity and aristocratic pretension vanished, replaced by pure, venomous rage.
“You!” my mother shrieked, pointing a long, manicured fingernail directly at me as she stormed across the polished marble floor, her heels clicking furiously. “You couldn't just keep your mouth shut, could you?! You had to ruin your sister’s happiest day out of sheer jealousy! You pathetic, bitter, ungrateful—!”
“Stop right there, Elena.”
A deep, commanding voice cut through my mother’s tirade.
Uncle Arthur—my father’s older brother and the patriarch of the extended Sterling family, a man whose word carried immense weight in Wall Street circles—slowly stood up from table two. His face was thunderous. He looked at my mother with absolute disgust, then turned his gaze toward my father.
“Is any of this true, Richard?” Uncle Arthur demanded, his voice trembling with controlled fury. “Are you financially ruined? Did you really let this young woman—your own flesh and blood—pay for this entire spectacle while your wife publicly humiliated her?”
My father couldn't even raise his head. He gave a microscopic, defeated nod.
Uncle Arthur’s expression hardened into granite. He reached down, picked up his linen napkin, and tossed it neatly onto his half-eaten plate of filet mignon.
“I have spent my entire life building the Sterling name with honor,” Uncle Arthur declared, his voice ringing out across the silent room. “And you two pathetic frauds have turned our family into a circus of debt and cruelty. Consider all family trusts and business partnerships terminated as of tonight.”
He turned away from the head table, his eyes locking onto me across the room. The harsh, judgmental stare he usually reserved for me was completely gone, replaced by a profound, heavy expression of respect.

Then, Uncle Arthur did something that made the entire room gasp in sheer disbelief.
He bowed his head slightly in my direction.
