Chapter 2 - The Hidden Paper Trail and the Bank's Secret

An hour after Sarah left, I walked out of the house and straight toward the commercial storefront at the front of the property—the very shop where Fiona ran her thriving nail salon, Gloss & Glamour, completely rent-free.
The shop was buzzing with customers. Fiona was standing near the reception desk, laughing loudly with two women while aggressively filing a client's acrylic nails. She looked up as the bell above the door chimed, and her smile instantly vanished when she saw me standing there in my full military fatigues, my expression cold enough to shatter glass.
"Lucy? What... what are you doing back? I thought your deployment didn't end until June?" Fiona stammered, dropping her nail file onto the counter.
The clients turned around to stare. I walked straight up to the counter, ignoring the whispers in the room.
"Fiona, pack up your equipment and lock up the shop," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the salon. "You have exactly two hours to clear your inventory out of this building."
Fiona’s face flushed bright red with indignation. She slammed her hands down on the reception desk. "Are you out of your mind?! George said I could use this space indefinitely! This is our family business! You can't just kick me out!"
"It’s my building," I retorted sharply, stepping close enough to make her flinch. "Willed to me by my Aunt Ellen four years before I ever married your brother. You haven't paid a single cent of rent, utilities, or property tax since you opened. The commercial lease agreement you supposedly signed with George? It was never notarized, and under my sole ownership deed, it is entirely null and void. Get out, or I’ll have the county sheriff physically remove your equipment by sunset."
Before Fiona could shriek another protest, I turned on my heel and walked out, leaving her sputtering in rage behind the counter.
Next, I drove straight to the main branch of our regional bank. I requested a private meeting with the branch manager, Mr. Henderson, an older gentleman who had known my Aunt Ellen for decades. I slid my military ID and my primary account statements across his mahogany desk.
"Mr. Henderson, I need a complete historical audit of our joint savings account and my personal inheritance account, going back twelve months," I requested.
Mr. Henderson frowned, tapping away on his computer terminal. After a few minutes, his expression turned grim. He turned the monitor toward me.
"Mrs. Sterling... I assumed you were aware of this. Three weeks ago, a withdrawal authorization bearing your notarized signature and digital security token was processed for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The funds were transferred directly into a newly opened corporate account under the name Sterling Real Estate Holdings LLC."
A cold shriek of realization echoed in my mind. One hundred and fifty thousand dollars—money I had saved from eighteen years of hazardous-duty military pay, intended for Chloe’s college fund and our emergency cushion—had been completely wiped out.
"I never signed any authorization," I said quietly, my blood running cold. "And I have been out of the state on active military deployment for the last three months."
Mr. Henderson adjusted his glasses, looking deeply alarmed. "If that signature is fraudulent... then someone committed identity theft using your military credentials. Furthermore, looking at the LLC registration... the sole managing partner listed on the paperwork is not your husband, George. It’s his mother, Teresa Sterling."
The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity. The remodeling project, the constant pressure to take the northern deployment, the free nail salon for Fiona, the drained savings account, and finally... leaving a five-year-old child locked in an empty house for days.

They hadn't just neglected Chloe. They had orchestrated a calculated financial ambush, expecting me to return in June to find a bankrupt bank account, a foreclosed property lien, and a forged quitclaim deed handing over my ancestral home to Sterling Real Estate Holdings LLC. By leaving Chloe alone, they had calculated that I would panic, react emotionally, and commit a legal misstep that they could manipulate in a custody court.
They thought I was a vulnerable, exhausted soldier far away from home. They had no idea what kind of storm they had just invited into their lives.
