Chapter 3 - The Family Dinner Trap

That evening, my phone buzzed on the kitchen table. It was a text message from George:
“Hey honey! Beach trip with the boys got cut short. Heading home tonight! Miss you and Chloe so much. Hope my little princess has been a good girl for you.”
I stared at the screen, a dark, bitter smile touching the corners of my lips. He thought he was coming home to a peaceful, unsuspecting wife and a quiet house where his scheme was still hidden.
I replied immediately: “Drive safe, babe. Come straight home. I’ve made a wonderful, warm dinner waiting just for you. We need to talk about our future finances.”
Two hours later, the front door clicked open. George walked into the foyer, looking deeply tanned, smelling faintly of expensive cologne and sea salt, carrying a designer duffel bag over his shoulder. He stepped into the kitchen, wearing his best disarming, charming smile, ready to play the devoted family man.
"Lucy! You're back early!" he exclaimed, stepping forward to wrap his arms around me.
I didn't move away, but I didn't hug him back either. I stood like a marble statue in my military fatigues, letting his arms drop awkwardly to his sides.
"Where have you been, George?" I asked softly, my voice completely devoid of emotion.
George chuckled nervously, tossing his keys onto the counter. "I told you, babe! A weekend getaway with my college buddies down at the coast. Didn't I text you?"
"For three days, Chloe was left entirely alone in this house," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "No food in the fridge. No adult supervision. A fever of 102 degrees. She had to drink tap water from a plastic cup just to survive while you were lounging on a beach."
For a split second, panic flickered in George’s eyes. But years of manipulation and narcissism quickly kicked in. His expression twisted instantly from charm to furious, righteous indignation.
"Are you insane?!" George shouted, throwing his hands up in the air. "Left alone?! Don't be ridiculous! I hired a neighborhood babysitter, a nice teenage girl named Madison! If Chloe was alone, it's because that lazy girl didn't show up! You always do this—you come back from your little military trips with your head full of paranoia, attacking me and my family!"
"Is that right?" I asked calmly.
Suddenly, the kitchen pantry door swung wide open. Stepping out into the bright light was Officer Davis from the local police department, accompanied by a social worker holding a clipboard, and—best of all—my friend Sarah, who had been recording every word of George’s outburst on an official audio recorder.
George’s face instantly drained of all color. He staggered backward, hitting the edge of the dining table.
"What... what is this?!" George stammered, looking wildly between me and the police officer.
Officer Davis stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "George Sterling, you are under arrest for felony child neglect, reckless endangerment, and aggravated financial fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."

"No! No, wait! Lucy, tell them! This is a mistake!" George shrieked, thrashing wildly as Officer Davis grabbed his arm and slapped the cuffs onto his wrists. "You can't do this to me! My mother will destroy you in court! Fiona! Call my mother!"
"Your mother can't help you, George," I said quietly, watching him as the police officers marched him toward the front door. "Teresa’s corporate LLC just got flagged by federal investigators for wire fraud and asset laundering. Your little family empire is officially crumbling."
