Chapter 1

Vanessa pushed me with both hands.
For one suspended second, I remained upright at the top of the marble staircase, staring into the face of the woman who had spent eighteen months pretending to be my friend. Then my heel slipped from the edge.
I wrapped both arms around my stomach before the first step struck my hip. My shoulder hit next, followed by my back. The chandelier swung above me as I tumbled, its lights breaking into white fragments across my vision.
I landed on the marble floor with enough force to empty my lungs.
The sound traveled through the enormous mansion.
Then everything became silent.
I was thirty-one weeks pregnant.
My first instinct was to feel for movement, but I forced myself to remain still. Beneath the pain burning through my ribs, I felt the faintest pressure inside my abdomen.
My daughter moved.
At the top of the staircase, Vanessa remained frozen with both hands raised. Fear appeared on her face, but calculation remained in her eyes.
Then Adrian looked at her.
My husband did not ask whether I was alive. He did not run toward the woman carrying his child. He gave Vanessa one tiny nod.
Her expression instantly changed.
Vanessa rushed down the stairs and dropped beside Adrian’s mother. “I swear I didn’t want this,” she cried. “Elena came at me. She was screaming, and I only pushed her away.”
Beatrice Howard hurried from the dining room and fell to her knees beside me. Several relatives followed her into the foyer.
“Elena?” Beatrice touched my cheek. “Can you hear me?”
I kept my eyes closed and made my breathing shallow.
Vanessa began sobbing harder. “She has been threatening me for weeks. She accused me of sleeping with Adrian. I tried to calm her down, but she’s completely unstable.”
Adrian descended the staircase slowly.
His composure frightened me more than the fall.
He crouched near my feet and said, “Mother, don’t move her. Elena has been confused lately. The pregnancy has made her paranoid.”
Beatrice stared at him. “Call an ambulance.”
“I already told the staff.”
He had not called anyone.
I knew because Detective Mateo Ruiz and two emergency medical technicians were waiting less than sixty yards away. If Adrian had contacted emergency services, Ruiz would have heard it through the police channel.
Vanessa gripped Beatrice’s arm. “She destroyed this family. She never loved Adrian. She only wanted the company, the mansion, and the Howard name.”
Adrian’s voice sharpened. “Vanessa, stop.”
“She was going to remove you from the board tomorrow. She said once the baby came, you would have nothing.”
“Stop talking.”
“She forced us to do this!”
Adrian seized Vanessa’s wrist and pulled her away from his mother. He lowered his voice, but the microphone sewn inside my cardigan captured every word.
“The cameras are off. Keep to the story.”
My fingers found the small emergency transmitter beneath the fabric.
I pressed it once.
A soft vibration confirmed the signal had been sent.
Vanessa looked toward the staircase. “What if she wakes up?”
“She won’t control anything after tonight.”
The mansion’s front doors opened.
Detective Ruiz entered first. Two uniformed officers followed him, along with the emergency medical team Adrian had never called.
Every face in the foyer turned toward them.
Adrian stood abruptly. “What are you doing in my home?”
Ruiz looked at Vanessa, then at the staircase, and finally at me.
“We heard everything.”
Vanessa stopped crying.
Adrian’s hand released her wrist.
I opened my eyes.
Beatrice gasped. “Elena?”
“I’m here.”
The paramedics moved toward me, but I kept my attention on my husband.
He stared down at the woman he thought he had just silenced.
I reached beneath my cardigan, removed the transmitter, and placed it in Detective Ruiz’s hand.
“The evidence is complete,” I whispered.
Adrian’s expression did not collapse when he saw the police.
It collapsed when he saw me smile.
May you like
Because he finally understood that the mansion had never been his stage.
That night, it became my courtroom.
