Chapter 3

Adrian had not married a powerless woman.
He had simply spent four years convincing me to behave like one.
My father, Samuel Marlowe, invested in Howard Properties when the company was one missed payment away from bankruptcy. He supplied the capital that preserved the hotels, the mansion, and the Howard reputation. In exchange, he received fifty-one percent of the voting shares.
Adrian courted me two years later.
He was patient, attentive, and entirely uninterested in discussing the company while my father remained alive. When Dad died, Adrian stood beside me through the funeral and told me I would never have to face another difficult decision alone.
At first, his help felt like love.
Then he began attending meetings in my place. He dismissed advisers who had worked with my father. He persuaded me that disagreement from board members was evidence that they did not respect me.
By the time I became pregnant, Adrian had removed nearly every person willing to challenge him.
Vanessa Cole became his director of communications eighteen months earlier. She was intelligent, charming, and unusually attentive whenever Adrian humiliated me in private. She brought tea to my room, accompanied me to prenatal appointments, and listened while I described how lonely my marriage had become.
All the time, she was sleeping with my husband.
Rosa, the mansion’s senior housekeeper, uncovered the first piece of the plan.
She found a torn draft of my supposed psychiatric evaluation inside Adrian’s study. The document claimed I had experienced hallucinations, paranoid delusions, and violent impulses toward Vanessa.
Rosa brought it to me folded inside a clean tablecloth.
“I heard Mr. Howard speaking to Miss Cole,” she whispered. “He said the board would believe an accident if they first believed you were sick.”
I wanted to confront Adrian immediately.
Instead, I contacted Detective Ruiz.
He warned me that the draft alone proved preparation for financial fraud but not a plan to harm me. He wanted me out of the mansion that night. I agreed until we discovered Adrian had instructed the estate security team to deactivate the cameras before the family dinner.
Ruiz believed the dinner was when they intended to act.
The police established surveillance outside the estate. I agreed to attend long enough to preserve any conversation about the forged documents, but I was never supposed to approach the staircase.
Adrian changed that.
Shortly before dinner, I entered the library and found him pressing Vanessa against the desk. When they noticed me, neither appeared embarrassed.
I placed the forged medical evaluation between them. “Which one of you wants to explain this?”
Vanessa stepped away from Adrian. “You shouldn’t be going through private documents.”
“My name appears eighteen times.”
Adrian calmly buttoned his jacket. “You need help, Elena.”
“I have already spoken to the doctor whose signature you forged.”
His expression changed.
Vanessa glanced at him. “You said she wouldn’t check.”
That was the first incriminating sentence captured by the redirected cameras.
Adrian moved between me and the door. “Give me the document.”
I tried to walk around him, but he caught my arm. Vanessa opened the library door and looked into the hallway.
“Everyone is downstairs,” she whispered.
Adrian pulled me closer. “Once the baby is born, your father’s trust locks those shares away for twenty-five years. Do you understand what you’re doing to this family?”
“I’m protecting my daughter from you.”
“You’re destroying everything.”
“No, Adrian. I’m calling an emergency board meeting and removing you.”
He looked toward Vanessa.
That single glance told her what to do.
She stepped into the hallway and began shouting that I had threatened her. Relatives emerged from the dining room while Adrian pushed me toward the staircase, pretending to restrain an unstable woman.
He wanted witnesses.
He wanted them to see the conclusion without seeing what caused it.
I pulled free near the upper landing. Vanessa followed me and seized my cardigan.
“You were supposed to sign the transfer,” she hissed.
“You were never getting my life.”
Her hands struck my shoulders.
I did not choose to fall.
I did not knowingly risk my daughter to complete a trap.
But once my body hit the marble and I realized I could still breathe, I understood that Adrian and Vanessa believed they had won. Remaining still for those few seconds allowed them to reveal what months of investigation might never have proven.
Vanessa admitted the push.
Adrian confirmed the cameras had been intentionally disabled.
Then he said I would control nothing after that night.

Their plan required silence.
Instead, they filled the mansion with evidence.
