Chapter 5 - Reinstatement

General Holden didn't just want to give me a medal; he wanted me back in the fight.
"The intelligence you gathered in Yemen didn't just neutralize the local cell, Riley," Holden explained, projecting a satellite map onto the wall of his war room. "It uncovered a massive smuggling ring funding their operations. We have a joint task force spinning up to dismantle it. I want you at the helm."
I looked at the map, tracing the familiar coastlines. My back ached, a phantom reminder of the chains and the fire. But underneath the pain, a fire I thought had been extinguished five years ago began to burn again.
"I’ve been out of the game a long time, sir. I’ve been pouring margaritas."
Holden chuckled. "You’ve been surviving. That’s what you do best. I’m pulling strings, waiving the medical review, and reinstating you with full clearance. But this time, you aren't a ghost. You're leading a sanctioned unit."
I touched the fabric of the clean, crisp uniform laid out on the table before me. It had the silver bars of a Captain, but Holden tossed a velvet box next to it.
