Chapter 9 - The Navy Cross

The ceremony was held in the grand rotunda of the Pentagon. It was everything my father’s retirement party was supposed to be, but magnified by a hundred.
I stood in my dress blues, the fabric pressing against my back, but I didn't feel the need to hide anymore. I knew what was underneath, and I was proud of the price I had paid.
General Holden pinned the Navy Cross to my chest, his voice echoing in the cavernous hall. "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy... Major Riley Vance represents the absolute best of the United States armed forces."
As the room erupted into thunderous applause, my eyes scanned the crowd.
Standing in the very back, near the exit doors, were two familiar faces. Thomas and Vanessa Vance. They hadn't been invited, but they had managed to slip in as spectators.
Vanessa looked haggard, a far cry from the glowing socialite on the beach. My father looked broken, a retired general watching the daughter he discarded achieve a level of glory he could only dream of.

They looked at me, desperate for a glance, a nod, any sign of recognition.
I looked right through them. I turned my attention back to the men and women who had stood by me in the mud and the blood. My real family.
